ALL info I have found over the years relating to WW1 medals shows them to have been sent automatically to the serviceman, or, if he had died, to his NOK

Locate the campaign medal roll in record series WO 329 for a soldier who served in the First World War.

If you find a soldier's medal index card in record series WO 372 (see above), make a note of the reference in the 'Roll' column for a particular campaign medal.

There is some useful information about medals here:

www.veterans-uk.info/medals/claiming.html

This seems to indicate that WW1 medals were sent out automatically.

Hi - My great grandad died in 1917- How do I know if his medals were claimed- I only just found out you had to 'claim' them- that they weren't automatically sent- only his wife was illiterate and ill when he died so wondrered if the family ever had them- she died a couple of years later nad the children were 'adopted' by other families and split up. I would like to get his service record- but cannot find anything about it so far (I am aware it may be burned) His name was Charles Parkhouse - from Exeter Devon. (and i know all the Burial details from CWGC thank you) He was with the Duke of Cornwall LI . I downloaded a medal card- from national archives online-but don't know how to tell if they were claimed or not? Help please anyone?
