Thanks so much everyone! Yes, I am using GRO and it appears I must have made a mistake as I have now been successful in ordering the certificate. I apologise for any inconvenience caused but do appreciate the help via Genes.

You must use the GRO refs..........have you ticked the box which asks if you know them?

I have just had a go. I was mistaken - if you have no ref number you need date of death. Are you ticking 'yes' to that question, that is that the reference is known? If you do, no date is required as far as I can see, just month and year..

Were you ordering from the GRO? If not, that is the site you should be using:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

If it is the GRO, and you are getting no joy, try omiting the reference numbers as suggested above. Worth a go!

Thanks everybody but I am in the middle of ordering the death certificate and they say I must give the actal date. I just inserted January 1997 but that was not accepted.

You also need the district name and number. This is the reference from Findmypast:-

Name: COLLINS, Brian Hedley
Registration district: Bristol
County: Gloucestershire
Year of registration: 1997
Month of registration: January
Date of birth: 14 February 1921
District no: 3011A
Reg no: A30C
Ent no: 086
DOR: 197

Unless things have changed lately you should be able to order the certificate with this.

Vera, I was just thinking that - I am sure you are right. I have ordered certs for deaths less than 50 years old with no date of death.
I wonder If Micheline has actually tried ordering, or just thinks she can't do so?

Hi,
If you are ordering the certificate from the General Registry Office(GRO)England you have all the information you need.

Have you tried this site, lists recent obituaries:

http://www.iannounce.co.uk/United-Kingdom/23

Otherwise, try ordering the death cert without the reference numbers. I think there is a loophole which allows you to do this without a death date.

Please could somebody kindly assist me with an actual date of death for the following:-

Brian Hedley Collins born 14 Feb 1921
Death January 1997 aged 75. Reg no: A30c Entry 86.

I require the actual date of death to order the death certificate. I have searched as far as possible and can only find the month and year of death and not the date. I would really appreciate it. I live out of the UK so my searches are limited and cannot find the details on the websites I subscribe to. Many thanks
Micheline
