I never thought about the births only been registered because of the baptism ... This side has been a nightmare because of the Howat/Hewit/Howatt/Howit/Howitt etc ... so many ways of spelling the one name.

I did thinik that the Hamilton could have been a middle name and he could have just adopted it as his first name but on his death record all that is registered as Hamilton Doggart - he died while living in an Asylum tho with no parents still alive so they may not have known ?

Still confuses me completely

Joseph, Samuel and Robert I think are listed as Hewett on family search

ErikaH Report 18 Apr 2013 15:17

The older children's births could not possibly have been registered.................see GB's info about civil registration in Scotland

Any info you have found would relate to their baptisms

Sometimes find that children born to an unmarried or widowed mother are shown in her maiden name

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 18 Apr 2013 15:08

Civil registration began in Scotland in 1855. You will not find a birth but might find a baptism on the old parish records

I presume you have already checked out familysearch

Was wondering if anyone could help me of give me guidance on where to go next ...

I have a Hamilton Doggart in my tree

Mother Ruth Hamilton

But cannot find a birth for him on scotlands people?

I know that Ruth Hamilton was previously married to Joseph Howat and they had 3 children (Joseph, Robert and Samuel) who were all registered in Girvan, Ayr.

I have him on the census ..

Robet Howat Son 16 - born in Girvan
Agnes Irvine (widow) Lodgrer 45 - born in Girvan
Elizabeth Irvine Lodger 18 - born in Girvan
Hamilton Doggart Son 9 - born in Girvan
Jean Taylor Granddaughter 6 - born in Girvan

1861 Census

Hamilton Doggart Son 18

1871 Census

Hamilton Doggart Son 30

1881 Census

Ruth Howat (widow) Head 70
Hamilton Doggart Son 30

1891 Census
Dalrymple Street, Girvan
Hamilton Doggart Lodger 50

1901 Census

Hamilton Doggart Patient 69 - lunatic

I also have a death for him

Hamilton Doggart - single - 76
30 November 1909
Ruth Hamilton - afterwards married to Joseph Hewit (deceased)
- senile decay
- cardio vascular disease
Registered in Alloway, Ayr

I can't seem to find a birth for him and was wondering if anyone had any hints or tips as to how I could go about this or any reason why this may not have been the case? I find it strange that she wouldn't register his birth when she registered her previous 3 childrens?

Any help would be appreciated
