Good morning from Western Australia

I have the marriage certificate and publication of Banns and neither have who Joseph parents were. On the Banns application Joseph is said to be "honest and sober" and that he had been emanicpated. I don't have his death certificate. Locating when and where he died is an ongoing search. The one you have mentioned is for an infant so not our Joseph.
Thank you for your interest and support.

Thank you for all the feedback.
I really appreciate the information on Liquor Pond Street. Many thanks for the links.
Yes I did see where in the transcript it states that Mary Jenner said she was living with Joseph Davis. Unfortunately it does not say what their relationship was.
I agree that I am looking for a needle in a haystack but thought it was worth asking.
It is 11pm here and time for sleep.

the trial transcript says

"MARY JENNER sworn. - I took the box out of the room where I lived with Mr. Davis, in Liquor-pond-street; it was empty, and I carried it over to my sister's. "

Holborn London

Liquor pond street comes out of the end of Gray's Inn lane, over against Kings Gate, and falleth into Leather lane, against Bedford street. The Street is handsome and large, with pretty good Buildings, indifferently inhabited. On the South side is Berry Court, a pretty open Place, with some good Houses; and hath a passage into Cox's Alley, on the back side of this Street, and fall into Leather lane. Cow Yard, long and ordinary. On the North side is Dering's Rents, which hath a passage into Tattle street; chiefly inhabited by labouring Men, and such like.

Unless you can find out his place of birth, your hopes of finding info must be minimal

His place of abode at the time of his trial is not an indication of his birthplace.

Presumably, thatt address was in the Whitechapel district of London

I am trying to learn what I can about my ancestor Joseph Davis before his trial. Joseph was tried at the Old Bailey in 1801. Transcript details are below.

http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?id=t18010916-41&div=t18010916-41
JOSEPH DAVIS, THOMAS HEAD, ESTHER HEAD, Theft > burglary, 16th September 1801.

Reference Number: t18010916-41
Offence: Theft > burglary
Verdict: Guilty > lesser offence; Not Guilty; Not Guilty
Punishment: Death

Instead of the death penalty he was transported to Sydney, Australia.
What we know is Joseph Davis was recorded as being 36 when he was tried. He was living at Liquor Pond Street and his trade was recorded as "watchmaker". The trial documents mention an Elizabeth Davis but not her connection. They also mention two women Mary Jenner and Mary Austin but not what their connection to Joseph was.
Joseph was transported to Australia per the "Glatton" in 1801. By 1804 he had a watchmaker's business in Sydney. He was assigned a female convict (Maria Marshall) and they had children. They did not marry until 1831 when Joseph's age was recorded as 67 and that he was a widower. Leading me to speculate he had a wife in England.

The England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892 has recorded with his description the words Whitechapel and Watchmaker.

I am hoping that fresh eyes may help in my search to learn more about Joseph. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
