When putting together the history of my grandfather Edwin Chapman .b.circa 1877 in melton mowbray leics there is a mystery. He married Mary Price in 1907 had two children mary and edwin.
In 1911 census his wife and children are in the workhouse but he is missing. There are any number of reasons he is away but to leave the family in the workhouse seems desperate.
I have now discovered he joined the army in 1901 so if he was still serving he could have been abroad with them, but if he was would they have been so destitute as to put the family in the workhouse.
Two years later my father was born so the family had not broken up.
Does anyone have any clues as to Edwins whereabouts or the Army conditions or if he would still be serving after 10 years?

Great minds Dea!

Just to make clear we are looking for the right person- on his attestation papers Edwin was a pie maker and he gives his next of kin as-

Father: Amos,
Mother: Mary,
Sister: Ellen,
Older Brother: Walter.

Is this the correct person?

if he left in 1906 could he be on reserve or similar? Thank you. You have the right person but the mystery is not solved.

I can't find the where abouts of Edwin in 1911- it may be worth contacting the Glamorgan Records office to see if they hold records for the workhouse, which may provide a clue as to why Mary and the children were there?:

Hopefully someone else will be able to solve your mystery.
