can anyone help with discovering which woman robert brown married in 1853? I have a robert brown with wife caroline in 1881 , in spotland bacup, lancashire. on the 1871 and 1861 they are in Norfolk, heigham parish . I have found two possible weddings, one in 1853 to caroline parnell, which is most likely due to their children being born in st martin of the oak . Then i have also found a marriage to a caroline read in 1853, south bevilingham norfolk. They had a lot of children, the first one being ellenor in 1853 ish and lastly jessie brown in 1878. I am favouring the parnell wedding. I think also that caroline's dad was John , someone posted an 1851 census for st martin of the oak parish with caroline born 1834, making her 17 then and unmarried. :-S shirley

Shirley, you can't guess - you'll need to buy a certificate to be sure. One of the children's birth certificates to show mother's maiden name.
Whereabouts did someone post that census?
|
This looks like the daughter's (on the 1861 census) birth reference:-
Name: BROWN, Caroline Registration district: Norwich County: Norfolk Year of registration: 1860 Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec Mother's maiden name: Not available before 1911 Q3 Volume no: 4B Page no: 93
The certificate should name the mother. The Parnell marriage looks good to me but you need the birth certificate of a child to be sure.

Thanks for that. Im helping someone out, so wouldnt tell them my guess, would tell them to get a certificate to be sure like you advised. They may even have jessie browns birth certificate somewhere in their paper work. they have been hearing a family story that this caroline was a flemish gypsy, not sounding like it with the name parnell or even Read to be honest. Still wondering why they would move from norfolk to bacup. Mind you, if they were shoemakers i suppose rossendale would be the ideal place to come. thanks again for your replies shirley :-)
