Do you know what information I might be able to find out if I went to look in the archives at Birmingham Library? Since most of the children seem to have been born in Birmingham, not West Brom (according to the census info)... is a bit easier to call in on my way through, than going out to West Brom. If you can offer any help on how best to get the most out of a visit there, if I'm able to go, I'd be very grateful. I might only have a couple of hours, and need to target my time. I've had trouble trying to search the archive on their website. Is there any way I can get references for files or information I might want to look at before I go?

Hello Ruth, not all parish records are on-line so you have to be careful not to assume that because a record is found that seems to fit that it is yours. Never rely on information on someone else's tree unless it is substantiated by certificates, etc. (We've all fell into that trap at some point and followed the wrong branch!)
If you know that the marriage to William Blewer is definitely the correct one then the best way to be sure of her father is to order the marriage certificate. You can get it from GRO, costs £9.25 and will give you father's details (names, occupations) if they knew their fathers. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp
Look the records up to get the references on FreeBMD http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Ruth
On the censuses her father is named as Charles Porter, not William
A tree at Ancestry has her mother as Hannah Gilbert but there is nothing to verify this
You could by a childs birth certificate to check the mothers name, there were children born after registration (1837)
Births Jun 1848 ---------------------------------------------------------- PORTER Martha Elizabeth W Bromwich 18 643

It is the first one you found. Thanks! I'm trying to find out about the parentage of both.
I've found some more information on his parents now. They were William Blewer (no dates yet) and Elizabeth Perry (circa 1796).
I'm very interested in discovering who her mother was.

Hi,
I'm looking for help finding out about my Great Grandparents, and am particularly interested in details that may be listed on marriage records, hoping that will lead me back to birth records for them and then details of their parents.
Louisa Porter. (She is apparently transcribed as Elegeen or Lugene on some of the census records) Born circa 1839, Died 1902. Parents William Porter and Hannah. I have no surname for her mother at present.
Married on 7/11/1859 at St James Church, West Bromwich. (Information from a cousin on this, but she didn't go much further as not her side of the family) I would like to know what records there are on this... IF there are any...
to: William Blewer. 1835-1885. Surname transcribed in some census records as Olewer. I have no other information on him or his parents.
Any help on this very much appreciated! Thanks!
