My Grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Fletcher born 1905 in Burton On Trent, on her birth certificate it say her mother was Hannah a domestic servant of Haston no fathers name and the informant was John Ashwood occupier of 145 Belvedere Road Burton On Trent, which I believe was a a work house. Why did Hannah end up in a work house? what happen to what to her after the birth. I have so many question any information would gratefully received. My G/Mother Mary Elizabeth went to live in Derby.
I hope some one can help me with finding information on Hannah and Mary Fletcher

Hi Marjorie - workhouses were very often hospitals as well - I know St.David's Hospital hre in Cardiff was the workhouse but also a hospital

Belverdere Rd workhouse became Queen's hospital.

There is a Haston in Shropshire. Don't know of another one.

Hi don.t know where or who Haston is just says on birth cert servant of Haston.
If I am correct in my findings Mary lived with the Taylors on the 1911 cenus she was a boarder. I may be completely wrong!!!

Hi everyone... just been looking at Marys birth cert and Haston could possibly be Hatton, writing not very clear!!!!
Thanks for all your help I know very little regrading my fathers family he left home at the age of 15 years and never spoke of them.
