Thomas McKay, born (Glasgow?) Lanarkshire 1873/4, died Woolwich, London 1942. He married Dublin-born Esther (Essy) McCarthy, served in the 15th Hussars and had children named Mary, Thomas, John, Margaret and Eileen.
Any information, hints or guidance that will enable me to find his birth and marriage and his own ancestry, will be very gratefully receives as at the moment I have hit a brick wall. Thank you.

Thanks for all the quick responses. I have Thomas McKay and his descendents pretty well covered from 1901 onwards. It is the earlier period and in particular any information that takes me back to his parents that I am seeking.
The 1911 census puts his birthplace as 'Lanarkshire' (not 'Lanark' - that's another kettle of genes) which accords with other information I have. However, the information on the marriage in Ireland to 'Esther Carthy' is I believe spot on. Grannie is recorded elsewhere variously as Esther and Essy McCarthy and also as 'MacKay' at one point. Given that she probably could not write, perhaps she did not know the difference?

Gins, will you point me towards where you found the marriage record as I have been unable to track it down online?

Thanks for all the help.

I got his marriage from Ancestry.co.uk and pulled the full details from his WW! Army record, same site

If you get the marriage certificate it should give you his fathers details, you can send for it here

I think it was John that died on 23rd April 1902? Thomas is on the 1911 census

Edit: Oh dear, Im not sure after looking again!

Gins, I can certainly say that John survived until 1981 as he was my Father! Thank you very much for the information supplied; I should at last be able to get somewhere.

Barry
