Hi LancashireAn,

Yes its the correct child, he was known in the family as George, I am not sure as to why, and Sydney didn't have any children that we know of. The Hughes family was and still is, very large and often called their children by second names or even pet names and not those they were christened. No doubt by now you can imagine the research I have had to do trying to sort them out, also they frequently went to stay with aunts and uncles especially it seems at census times, just to fool me. I am in touch with the outflung Hughes now in Australia, America, New Zealand, Bermuda, and so on. To further confuse things I originallly found them in Kennington, Lomdon, then all brothers and sisters moved up to Liverpool, I them lost them until I found them on the 1891 census back in London. Such fun????. Family records were lost in the last War via Hitler Bombing.
Thank you for the interest, I just have the gap for Stephen Stewart to fill, the search for whom has taken 15 years so far, any help with him would be appreciated.
regards and Happpy Christmas, June

are you sure that 1891 is the right one or have I got the wrong entry - it is the only one I can find in Tottenham

Name Age
Mary A Hughes 60
Sidney Hughes 27 - son
George Hughes 3 - grandson (Edward Stewart????)
Janet Morris 39 - visitor
Arthur Morris 14 - visitor

this on the face of it looks as if George was the son of Sidney though he is nor with them in 1901. Unless his birthday wa close to the census date your Edward George would only have been 2 years old

Hi Moira,
Thank you for your prompt reply re Stephen Stewart, that is the name of the father and his age and birthplace are unknown. His son was named Edward George Stewart b.1888 in Liverpool and whos mother was Florence Malwenna Stewart (nee Hughes) the house is listed in the name of Stewart also. I have found no marriage between Stephen and Florence, In the 1891 census Edward is listed and living with his Grandmama Mary Ann Hughes (nee Shands) and his uncle Sidney Hughes plus two servants in Tottenham, Middlesex plus two servants, there is no trace of Florence. I have a large Hughes tree and followed Florence up to her death in 1934/5. I thank you for your suggestion and interest in this matter. regards June

Hi MarieCeleste, Thank you for prompt reply. The son of the above was named Edward George Stewart b.1888 Liverpool to Florence Malwenna Stewart (nee Hughes), I have found no marriage cert for Florence and Stephen but she called herself Stewart and the house was rented in that name. On the 1891 census there is no trace of Florence, however, Edward is now living with his Grandmama Mary Ann Hughes and his uncle Sidney Hughes plus two servants in Tottenham, Middlesex. I have tried name vaiations for Stephen and traced a few trees but to no avail.
I do hope this will be helpful. Regards June

On the Free BMD there are only 4 (Male) Stewart born in Liverpool in 1888 so you have the Childs birth cert. If you can give us the names of the child and Mother it would help.

Have you checked for a marriage between him and the mother of his child?

All I have is a name on a Birth Certificate for a his son born in 1888 in Liverpool. Stephen is listed as being a ships steward, I have searched for 15 years for Stephen but to no avail. There is family talk of him jumping ship in America, but that is all. Any info or suggestions on searching for him would be most helpfull and then I would finally be able to fill the only gap on a large family tree .
