After his court appearance in April 1857, Richard ended up in jail - see about halfway down the right-hand side of this page:

Maybe unrelated, but I wonder if this could be Richard's son William ??

The Northampton Mercury August 4th 1855

STONY STRATFORD PETTY SESSIONS: Thomas Stanton and W. Jordan, both of Old Stratford, were charged with illegally fishing in the Buckingham arm of the Grand Junction Canal. Stanton was discharged, and Jordan fined £1 and costs; allowed 14 days to pay.

ArgyllGran Report 26 Apr 2015 21:38

"The Falcon Inn stood at the north-west corner of the crossroads, where again a building existed in the early 17th century. (fn. 114) The owner c. 1630 was Christopher Reeve, who had been succeeded by a man named Gibson by 1635. (fn. 115) George Emmerson was the owner by 1653; either he or a namesake was still there in 1700. (fn. 116) Between 1702 and 1707 a quit rent due to the manor of Furtho was paid by Goody Hillier, who had been succeeded by 1711 by Margaret Hillier, who died in 1715. (fn. 117) John Hobbs was the owner by 1725; (fn. 118) after his death in 1736 the inn passed to his widow Judith, who died in 1751, when it was inherited by Edward Forfett, a London limner, whose brother John had married the Hobbses' daughter Phyllis. During this period a fire, in May 1742, destroyed three houses standing on tofts adjoining the inn. (fn. 119) John Furnice paid rates on the Falcon in 1739, presumably as tenant. (fn. 120) Forfett died in 1761, leaving the Falcon to his daughter Frances, the wife of Isaac Riviere, a London goldsmith, who sold the property (on which two new houses had been built to replace those burnt down) the following year to Christopher French and John Hall, also of London, for £60. (fn. 121) In 1773 French and Hall sold the premises to Matthew Willison of Old Stratford for £150. His family retained the Falcon until about 1820, (fn. 122) after which it belonged to Josiah Michael Smith. (fn. 123) The inn was later acquired by the Kendalls of Dovehouse Farm, Deanshanger, and was sold with the rest of their estate in 1877. (fn. 124) It closed shortly before the First World War (fn. 125) and by 1925 the buildings had been demolished to improve the road junction. (fn. 126)"

No mention of Richard Jordan - presumably he just managed (or mismanaged?!) it for the Kendall family, or Josiah Smith.

No mention of him on this site either:

No idea if related, but thought the name of the pub might be useful- just in case:

On Tuesday next on August 5th, 1856, on the premises of Mr Richard Jordan, Falcon Inn, Old Stratford- (under execution from the sheriff)...

Welcome to the boards, Neil.

Just in my opinion - can't prove it - I think they are the same person.
According to a tree on Ancestry, the Richard in the 1851 census posted by Chris married Elizabeth Landay Vincent.

The Oxford one is a publican and farmer.
Yours was a publican and agent for sale of artificial manure - which would fit with being a farmer.

Yours was a coachman in Cambridge in 1841, an inn-keeper in Cambridge in 1851, and an omnibus driver in Hackney 1861.
That would fit with a history of an unsuccessful foray into inn-keeping, followed by a move away from Cambridge, and a return to his original occupation.

You say you would like info re Richard of Cambridge and descendants. What info do you already have, apart form that listed by Chris? It would save us duplicating research if we knew that.

From a little quick searching:
In 1871 he's still an omnibus driver in Hackney.

His son Frederick Vincent Jordan married Edith Roberts in 1879:

Marriages Jun 1879 (>99%)
Jordan Frederick Vincent Hackney 1b 719
ROBERTS Edith Elizabeth Hackney 1b 719

In 1881 they're living with Edith's mother and siblings:

Edith E. Jordan
in the 1881 England Census

Name: Edith E. Jordan
[Edith E. Roberts]
Age: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861
Relationship to Head: Daughter (Child)
Mother: Maria Roberts
Gender: Female
Where born: Poplar, Middlesex, England
Civil Parish: Croydon
County/Island: Surrey
Country: England
Street address: 22 High Street
Marital Status: Married
Occupation: Clerks Wife
Registration district: Croydon
Sub registration district: Croydon

In 1891 Frederick's a pauper in Hackney Union Workhouse, and in 1901 he's in Hackney Union Infirmary - listed as married. Can't see Edith after 1881 so far.

I am researching my 2gg Richard Jordan b. 1808 in Stratford, Essex. I am wondering if the Richard Jordan mentioned by Elizabeth is he or the one from Oxford. My 2gg was married to Elizabeth Vincent and he appears in the London Gazette Jan 16 1857. I would be grateful for any information anyone might have about Richard Jordan of Cambridge and his descendants. I have all the information listed by chris ho.

Edits, (can now see article on Gazettes Online, London, 28th April 1857, says he is out of business, late of Old Stratford, Northampton, Publican and Farmer, before then of Wordington and Great Bourton, both in County of Oxford)

Might be more to be found in newspapers local to area he was living at time, Northamptonshire.

Why the County Court of Oxfordshire?

Eaj123

Eaj123 Report 19 Feb 2012 23:21

Could somebody please help put a family mystery to bed?

Do you know where I can find information on the County Court of Oxfordshire? I have the following info from the London Gazette and wondered if there is anywhere that I can find more information on the case?

London Gazette of Tuesday 28 April, 1857: This appears to be a summonsi s for Richard Jordan. It mentions that he was a publican and farmer and is from Old Stratford, previously Wordington and Bourton.

I have a lot of information about Richard in general but just need this piece.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes
