Val, if Penny doesn't reply, I suggest you send her a message by clicking on her name. She posted this 4 years ago so might not be checking.

Mmm interesting - London Births and Baptisms have Mary Ann Weaver of St George's Parish, Stepney, Tower Hamlets giving birth to an illigitimate child, called Jane Weaver on Nov 27th 1851. And the next but one entry is for Sarah, illigitimate daughter of Sarah Smith of the same parish, born 15th Dec 1851. This could tie up with the baptism entries in my note above, assuming there was some mistake with the mother's name.

Hi Penny
I wonder if this could be her... There was a Jane Weaver , daughter of Jane Weaver, of St Georges Workhouse in Tower Hamlets, baptised at S George in the East on 7th Jan 1852. Tower Hamlets is right next to Poplar.
There is also a death ref for a Jane Keeble who died in Thanet Kent in 1938 (which I presume is her) which says she was born in abt 1852.
Also, interestingly, the adjacent entry on the baptism record is for Sarah, daughter of Sarah, also from St Georges Workhouse. And Jane junior named her eldest daughter Sarah...
(I shall be investigating further! - Jane Keeble was my husband's 2nd gt grandmother) Best wishes Val

PS Just found the relevant birth cert, but haven't got time to order till after the weekend. Jane Weaver Oct - Dec 1851 St George in the East, London vol 2 pg 96 :-)

Thanks to everybody for your help, I am beginning to agree with Jennifer that the birth may never have been registered. Jane never remarried and the 5 children remained very close to Jane throughout her life. I was hoping the forum could give alternative suggestions for searches but this is going to be one of those dead ends!
Again many thanks for your help everybody.

1891 census - also says Jane born Poplar. She is a widow already with 5 children!!! The 1911 has Whitechapel as pob. Was hoping she may have gone home at some point to mother or a sibling

Chris, first of all registration was not compulsory until 1870's so the birth may never have been registered. it is also quite possible she 'made up the father Samuel' to save face. Does he have an occupation on the marriage cert?

Hi Rutlandbelle
I have seen this entry and wondered whether she lied about her age to get a job, if it is she would have been between 14 and 15 years old. Again she says birthplace Poplar?
Many thanks Penny

PM:

Yes I have census entries with husband and family after marriage in 1880 right up to her death but nothing before her marriage! Were there people who refused to give information to enumerators, seems funny that no census info at all before 1881?
Many thanks Penny

Have advised Penny to put replies on here and give us details of 1881 census so we can have a look properly.

Have you got her on a census with her husband? If not, please give us his details.
It's unusual to put birthplace on a marriage cert.

I have spent quite a few years looking for information about this relative. She stated she was born in Poplar in approx 1857 on her marriage certificate and father was Samuel Weaver deceased, but can find no records of her before this date. I would appreciate any guidance as to where else to look. I have tried London Metropolitan, census, Familysearch, BMD, have researched all near matches and found nothing with the information she gave, beginning to think info false?
Many thanks Penny :-)
