Lavinia Holland- Birmingham or Jersey?

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Vanessa Report 20 Nov 2011 18:25

I am tracing a new strand . The family I need help with are

1911
Alfred Holland 1866
Lavinia Holland 1880
Lavinia Holland 1900
other sisters- laura/ Violet/Hilda - all born after 1901 census so no real help.
Aston, Birmingham

Lavinia 1880 is listed as being from jersey . Married Alfred i believe in 1899 - maiden name Robinson.
As a coincidence I have another completely separate strand also from Jersey so have used their OPAC to find info before. No sign of a Lavinia Robinson being born there and no sign of her as Robinson or Holland on any other census.

I can trace Alfred c1864 with his parents Alfred and Hannah back through to 1871 but no sign of him with Lavinia and Lavinia as baby on 1901

Thank you for any help.

Thank you GB and Astra. I really appreciate your time and interest.
I wonder on the 1901 census whether Birmingham was an assumption rather than true as Lavinia's place of birth ?? It seems odd that she then has Jersey on 1911 , not somewhere you could easily mistake and of course it was filled in by the household themselves.

I believe she should be appearing on other census with Jersey as POB however as I said she didn't pop up on the Jersey OPAC so ??

Thanks again

Vanessa :-)

If she was only in Jersey briefly, for example if her father was in the Army, then there would be no reason for her to show up on OPAC.

The baptisms on the site are only for the St Helier C of E churches. There are 11 other parishes plus all the usual denominations, that's assuming she was actually baptized.

I'll have a look in the birth indexes next week.

Hi,JL thank you that's very kind. We have been in touch before about a completely separate family , the Perrys from Jersey and you very kindly helped me out.

I have started this new family branch and thought from experience I would be able to track Lavinia myself, however I have been a little thwarted.
hopefully with all the wonderful help and advice on here i may crack it.
best wishes

Thanks Ozibird, this looks interesting. I did do a search of Lavinia Robinson births and if we go with the Birmingham theory then there is only one birth in JuneQ 1880 that fits. I believe I found the correct death in 1962 for her as Lavinia Holland and she was 82 so I think her year of birth probably was c1880.

Thanks again - going to look at this new info now.

There is no birth registered for Lavinia Robinson in any of the 12 parishes so the Birmingham birth is looking more likely.

Thank you JL, I appreciate your efforts on my behalf. It may be for some reason she came up with Jersey though why I can't think.

I did have another look at the births and census and found an 11 month old "orphan" Lavinia Robinson living with a Samuel Lloyd and his wife Pris(cilla ?) in Wednesbury, district West Bromwich 1881. That Lavinia is listed as born in Wednesbury and ties in with the birth in jun Q 1880 in West Bromwich.- maybe.

Going to look again at the family John Robinson family in 1891 that Ozibird found and see if I can follow them back or forwards to pick up any clues.

Thanks again
Vanessa ;-)

You need Lavinia's marriage cert for her father's name & occupation.

Marriages Jun 1899
Holland Alfred Birmingham 6d 359
Mountford Minnie Birmingham 6d 359
Robinson Lavinia Birmingham 6d 359
Toddington Edwin Birmingham 6d 359

I have been looking at the Lavinia born in West Bromwich and the one in 1891 with John Robinson but I can't make sense of either of them.
The Lavinia with John Holland is not with him in 1881. He is a widower and appears to be a widower in 1871. I suppose there is a chance that he married again and was widowed again . I was trying to find Lavinia and Alice M together somewhere in 1881. I also can't find the Lavinia from West Bromwich in 1891. No death is listed. I looked for a link between the Lloyds and the Robinsons but couldn't find anything to work on. I was trying to figure out if they were the same Lavinia but can't prove it and there does appear to be two different births. It's all very confusing.

I've been looking at 1881 (below for reference). It caught my eye that there is a Lavinia living with the Robinson family. Lavinia is not a common name so I just wondered if there was some kind of connection. There are a couple of lusty sons in the Robinson family.

1881 England Census
Name: John Robinson
Age: 49
