Stephen Kirkup (same name) is my granfather.
My father (aso Stephen) was a result of his third marriage.

MarieCeleste I cannot thank you enough.

I also think Polly Kirkup is right as well because my grandmother was Mary Lowson and she was always known in the family as Polly.

So thank you once again.

This could possibly be Mary Hird on her way to marry Stephen (perhaps that's why he came back to England?)

Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1956
about Mary Hird
Name: Mary Hird
Arrival Date: 26 Mar 1909
Port of Arrival: St Albans, Vermont, United States
Ship Name: Victorian
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Age: 28
Birth Date: abt 1881
Birth Country: England
Gender: Female
Race/Nationality: English
Record Type: Manifests

Her occupation was a domestic, and onward destination was Lateral Falls, (must be Latourell). She gives her relative as mother Martha Ruston of Askrigg.

She appears to be travelling with a Robert Hunter, age 20 - a farmer, who is also going to Lateral Falls. He gives his relative as father Solomon Hunter, of Main Street, Askrigg.

Roger, I've just edited and added a few things above.

The info is all from Ancestry, but with a worldwide subscription.

I haven't yet found a death for Mary Kirkup.

Thank you all so much This is him and another part of the jigsaw for him put in place.

His second wife Esther Lowson died in childbirth and he married again shorttly afterwards. All which I knew about, but it was the American connection which I knew nothing about.

This is his arrival in Canada:

Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935

Name: Stephen Kirkup
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1882
Date of Arrival: Jun 1905
Vessel: Lake Manitoba
Port of Arrival: Montreal, Quebec
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Roll: T-485

(From Durham, travelling to Portland)
Then his border crossing from Canada to the US:

Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1956

Name: Stephen Kirkup
Arrival Date: 30 Jun 1905 in Quebec
Port of Arrival: St Albans, Vermont, United States
Ship Name: Lake Manitoba
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Age: 23
Birth Date: abt 1882
Gender: Male
Race/Nationality: English
Record Type: Manifests

This Stephen is occupation Farmer, and last resided in DURHAM!! His onward destination was what looks like Labourell Falls, Portland Oregon. He had never been to the US before, he had paid his own passage and had the requisite $50.

So, this certainly seems to be the Stephen found in the 1910 census above.

EDIT: I believe his destination would have been Latourell Falls, which is in Multnomah County.

This is the closest census I can find, but I'm a bit doubtful because of location and occupation: (EDIT: The border crossing I found below now indicates that this most likely is him).

1910 United States Federal Census

Name: S Kastrup [S Kirkup] (Name is definitely Kirkup)
Age in 1910: 27
Estimated Birth Year: 1883
Birthplace: England
Relation to Head of House: Head [Self (Head)]
Father's Birth Place: England
Mother's Birth Place: England
Spouse's Name: Mary Kastrup
Home in 1910: Hurlburt, Multnomah, Oregon
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of immigration: 1905
Household Members:
Name Age
S Kastrup 27
Mary Kastrup 28
Thomas James 53

Occupation looks like Farmer.

** Can't see this man on the 1920.

This looks like the marriage for this couple:

Oregon Marriages, 1906-1920

County: Multnomah
Marriage Date: 26 Jun 1909

Name: Mary Hird
County: Multnomah

For helper's reference, I think this is the 1907 inbound passage:

** his occupation looks like "barber" on the original.

EDIT: Information found below indicates that Roger's Stephen was a farmer.

Hello Roger, when was Stephen born? Knowing his age will help when looking for a marriage.

I guess this is the 1913 marriage, and assume it says he was a widower?

Have you looked for him on the 1911 Canadian census to see if he was still in Canada at that time?

You will find the 1911 census online at http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/1911/index-e.html

Roger

Roger Report 29 Aug 2011 13:05

I am looking a a mrriage of Stephen Kirkup from Co. Durham, in either Canada or America, between 1908 and 1913 when he married in Co Durham as a widower.

I know he went to canada 1905 returned 1907 then went back again in 1908 via Ellis Island, but cannot find exact date of returning.

So can someone point me in the right direction by either how to find a marriage in America or just advice where to look/

And I have been on Ancestory all morning looking from 1908till 1913 for his return.
