Just a long shot, but I came across a John Weir who may have married a g g aunt of mine. This is an IGI record for the birth of a Sarah Anne Weir:

Name: Sarah Anne Weir
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 20 Nov 1879
Birthplace: Grange, Armagh, Ireland
Father's Name: John Weir
Mother's Name: Mary Gilbert Weir
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C00667-9
System Origin: Ireland-EASy
GS Film number: 256037
Reference ID: v 1-1 p 54

If Mary is who I think she is, she was born in c1858 and it would make sense for the to have a husband born in about 1851. I doubt if this is your John Weir, but you never know.

Good luck.

I haven't been able to find a birth for Catharine, just that she was born in Woolwich.
Rose, that post on BMD you refer to is by my cousin Margaret, she's been trying to find information on Florence, Catharine's daughter (yet another brickwall there though!)
It looks as though the family moved around a lot, due to Thomas's job. Information relating to Sarah Ann confirms the military connection shown in the birth info above for John. So it looks like that is my family, but I still wonder what happened to John, and why he is not on any later census records.

I have also found a birth record for a Thomas, to Thomas and Mary Ann, in 1852, so now they may have an extra son as well. But again, he isn't listed on any other census's either. Tricky!!

John's birth perhaps. This would confirm his mother's maiden name

That baptism and marriage information certainly does seem as if it would match my Thomas. The fact that the marriage references "Royal Artillery" matches what I know of Thomas's occupation.
Maybe the birth certificate I have seen that says Mary Ann Holland has her name recorded wrong, it may well be that it should be Hullahan. The other thing that stands out for me is Mary Ann's parents names, James and Catharine. Both names are used for their children.

I'll look into the possibilty that it should be Hullahan and not Holland. All other family trees belonging to relatives have her as Holland, but it may be incorrect. How interesting!

Thank you so much for all the help, I really appreciate it. I had hit a wall with John, and this has given me some more avenues to pursue.

Agree Kath.

I suppose it's not impossible, for whatever reason, that if they went to Ireland that young John stayed there perhaps with grandparents.

I think the word that Astra couldn't make out could possibly be Sergeant.

Can't find any of them in 1861 which is when John is most likely to be with them. I wonder if they went to Ireland for a while. Maybe Thomas was posted there.

and this:

Liverpool, Lancashire, England, Catholic Marriages, 1754-1921

Name: Thomas Weir
Marriage Date: 16 Jun 1850
Parish: St Francis Xavier´s (Francisci Xavarii)
Spouse's Name: Mary Ann Hullahan
Father's name: John Weir
Mother's name: Ann Weir
Spouse Father's Name: James Hullahan
Spouse Mother's Name: Catharine Hullahan

No occupations given. Address for Thomas looks like "Roy Arty Buckfield" ??. Mary Ann's address is "Old Swann". Witnesses were Joseph Hall and Bridget Kenny.

This marriage certainly seems to be connected to the baptism of Thomas, above, but whether they're "your" Weirs I don't know. There are slight similarities between Holland and Hullahan......

Hello Crista, do hope you're OK - my brother lives in Tokyo so I can fully understand how you must feel.

I came across the following, don't know if it's a connection or coincidence:

Liverpool, Lancashire, England, Catholic Baptisms, 1802-1906

Name: Thomas Weir
Birth Date: 1 Dec 1852
Baptism Date: 5 Dec 1852
Parish: St Francis Xavier´s (Francisci Xavarii)
Father's name: Thomas Weir
Mother's name: Mary Ann Woolan < (Original looks like Hoolan)

Sponsors were Conor and Ann Dignan. Address for the family and the sponsors was "Old Swan".

Sorry, I'm only just seeing these replys now. I'm in Christchurch, New Zealand, and we had 2 more earthquakes yesterday, and were without power for a while. Thanks for the responses.

The baptism for John may be correct, despite the mothers name being different. I have since found out that there is speculation that Thomas had 2 wives, perhaps they were both called Mary Ann, just to be difficult!

I have a scanned copy of Sarah Ann's birth certificate, it definitely has her mother as "Mary Ann Weir, previously Holland". She was born in Devon, Granby Barracks from what I can decipher. And I just see now I have a typo, her birth year should read 1859, not 53.

I don't think that Mary Ann Holland is mine, she is listed on later census's as Mary Ann Weir still. The family ended up in Swansea, where the later girls were born.

That death record is the one I saw, but the more I think about it, the less likely it seems. There was another one in 1853 in Liverpool, that would make more sense, since I cannot find him anywhere later than 1851. Or if Mary Ann Lucin was infact Thomas's first wife, perhaps John stayed with her after Thomas remarried?

Frustrating! Shame he wasn't called something really unusual, so much easier to track down!
