Hi

Would anybody be abe to find me the baptism of Sarah Cook (or Cooke) who was born circa 1779 in Besthorpe in Nottinghamshire. She married Thomas Bingham in 1799 at Sutton on Trent and lived there until her death in 1861.

Thankyou

Yes i've tried Familysearch but no luck. Doesn't look like it covers Besthorpe that early.

Many children were not baptized immediately

some families baptized their children in batches

some children were baptized before starting work

some were baptized just before they got married, etc etc

which all means that you should search well beyond the supposed birth year ..... as well as going back at least 10 years to be sure that she wasn't born earlier than you think

have you done all that?

My OH's 3x gt grandmother was b1823 however she was not baptised until 1848 in the town that she married...so may be worth checking on baptisms in Sutton.

Was hoping marriage would give father's name but no, too early for that.

Hi Derek,

I have been to Nottingham archives today and looked at the parish records for you.

Besthorpe did not have a church of its own so they used the church at South Scarle, I found the Following
Baptism's
Sarah 11 Nov 1782 daughter of William and Elizabeth Cooke of Besthorpe
her sibings were
Ann 21 April 1781
Mary 27 Aug 1785
Elizabeth 10 Nov 1787
John 23 Aug 1781
all children of William and Elizabeth Cooke

Marriage of Sarah Cook and Thomas Bingham both of Sutton on Trent 21Sept 1799 at Sutton on Trent Church by Licence, one of the witteness was a Ann Cook.
As the marriage was by licence I looked at some books the archives have on marriage Licences and Bonds and found a Bond for Sarah and Thomas it said,

Marriage bond 21 Sept 1799 Thomas Bingham of Sutton on Trent a batchalor., aged 22yrs and Sarah Cook of Sutton on Trent, a spinster aged 17yrs [Bond by Thomas Bingham and John Milnes of Sutton on Trent].
John Milnes said that William Cook, Father, gave consent.

Hope this all helps and let me know if your want anything else looking at.

Margaret, welcome to the Boards.
It would be best if you started your own thread about John, so what you have asked doesn't get lost within this one and Derek's replies stay together and clearly follow on.
Also, please remove your email address, this is not a secure site and it's against GR T&C's. Anyone who wants to answer you will add information to your thread.

Having said all that, incase you don't do the above, by using the family search website for free
https://familysearch.org
and allowing a wider birth year range and following Wendy's tip about South Scarle church being used by Besthorpe folk, there is this possibility

Name: John Hoyes
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 07 Nov 1813
Christening Place: SOUTH SCARLE,NOTTINGHAM,ENGLAND
Father's Name: Thomas Hoyes
Mother's Name: Susannah
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C06064-1 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 503813, 504067, 504533

If you start your own thread, the information about John can be copied over.
