Hi, have you looked at paperspast? A John COUTTS had adds in the Colonial paper Nelson as early as 1875. Also saw an artical that a John COUTTS had gone to Pleasant Valley, Palmerston Sth. same paper 16 Mar 1908. Pat

Wow, what amazing information. My most sincere thanks to Jullcoe and Rootgatherer. I am very interested in ALL information I can get re this family and earlier generations. All the names see to tie up and I appreciate the effort you have both gone to to help me.
So sad to read of the births/deaths of the three children in Melbourne, not forgetting the couple lost son on voyage out. Maybe family was only in
Bothwell a short time? However have heard there were Coutts there in the early days - maybe relatives came out earlier?
Anyway will enjoy adding all you have kindly sent to my tree.

1863 Statutory Deaths, District Number 147/01, Entry Number 20
Deaths in the Burgh of Banff in the County of Banff.

Susan McHattie, aged 84 years, widow of John McHattie, Gardener, died at 7h. 0m. Am on Fourteenth February 1863 at Boyndie Street, Banff. Her father, William Hoice (could be Soice??)and her mother Susan Hoice (or Soice??) maiden surname Light were both deceased. The cause of death was Morbus cordes, Asthma, Oedema (sorry it is a bit difficult to read) as certified by A. I. Mason M.D. Banff. The informant was Peter Coutts, son-in-law, present. The death was registered 21st. February 1863 at Banff by Robert Leask, Registrar.

I am sure that there is more there, unless of course that Lyndsay is only looking for the family after they emigrated.

Looks like John's mother maybe died in child birth as he seems to be an only child.

Perhaps Peter's marriage to Susan was a second marriage?

Further information sought re:
John Coutts born1853 in Banff, Scotland, died 1919 in Nelson, New Zealand.
m Ann Duff Mackie b 1852 in Aberdeenshire, died 5 Aug 1932 in Nelson,
New Zealand. Only know of one child Peter Coutts b 18 Jan 1879 in
Banff, Scotland.
Family went to NZ via Australia and some stayed in Bothwell, Tasmania,
some went to Melbourne, others went to New Zealand. But when all this
happened is unknown.
