I wonder if this one is connected?

Births Dec 1890 (>99%)
Daubeney Robert Tait Woolwich 1d 1095

His son?

Woolwich has strong military connections.

Ahem. If you have those records, you post them. Useful excerpts, anyway.

No bumph.

The brother Ernest, can you give us some specifics on him? First sighting after birth is in the workhouse school?

Thanks for bumping this girls!

To save anyone doing any unnecessary searching - I have every census record from 1881, his marriage, military, death and the births and vital records of all the children.

It's only his birth and the 1871 that I can't find.

I do actually have that saved in my Shoebox on Ancestry! However in the 1871 census those 2 have several children, but not a Robert.

Have you got him on the 1871 census?

Thanks Michael - that's him. He was a student at the Military Music Academy. They have no record of his birth.

I should have added that I have all records since his birth, it's the birth record itself that's the problem!

The above was my great-grandfather. His year of birth is verified by census, military, marriage & death certificates. All census records confirm his birthplace as London, Middlesex.

However, I can find no record of his birth or his parents.

Although in all cases he gave his mother's name as Alice, he varied in what his father's name was. On his marriage in 1889 he said it was Frederick Charles, Soldier (deceased) and that was the name he gave on military records in 1906. But in 1911 he said his father was HENRY Charles. (No trace of suitable records for either of these two)

The Tait is obviously significant because he gave that name to his son (also Robert). Whether Tait was his mother Alice's name or from his father's side I've no way of knowing.

I've been searching for a few years without success (checked every possible variant of the name and contacted tree owners, to find they had same problem. No living relatives or family records either).

I think it's highly unlikely anyone could now find a birth record (although I'd be thrilled!) but I'd be interested in any suggestions of where else to try and indeed any theories about why I can't find anything, e.g. illegitimacy, adoption.

Thanks in advance
