Anne, I've only just found this thread. I hope you're able to read this. I'm fairly new to this site.

I'm related to Canon Frederick George Williams, who was the brother-in-law to Joseph Pike.

I have written a thesis on the Canon, which mentions Joseph Pike

As mentioned above , before moving to Goulburn, Joseph worked at St Peters, West End, Townsville Qld.

Being a married man with child Joseph felt he couldn't live on the wage offered. He suggested FG take up the job.

I've had a quick glance at the thread above. The things I can add to this thread are:

Canon Williams was at St Peter's from 1895 - 1946, which is possibly the longest single stint in one parish in the C of E in Au history.

He is buried in Townsville.

The Bishop of NQ at the time was Bishop Feetham, who was High Church (candles/icons etc) while Canon Williams was definitely Low Church.

This brought Canon Williams into conflict with Bishop Feetham, who was very much High Church.

If my memory is correct, Joseph Pike was a High Church man as well.

Anne, hope this helps you and anyone else we're related to. :-)

Hi Ann,

If you do have a name for your great uncle, could you please let me know, I will have a look for more info. Any details about him, parents, when/where born etc., when he might have left England.

Hopefully, alviegal will read this, and might be able to give you the details on when Joseph and Adelaide departed from England. (my estimates are Joseph 1880's and Adelaide 1860s)

The nla newspaper site, has lots of information from various papers around Australia. I originally found it a couple of years ago, when I was looking for details on 2 brothers who died at the same time. What I found was the drowning of the 2 brothers, whose punt had capsized, as well as the inquest into their deaths.

And now we go to a wedding!!

Sydney Morning Herald 23 September, 1911

The marriage of S.J. Curtis eldest son of Mr J. Bryon Curtis (late Editor of the London "Standard") to Evelyn Josephine, only daughter of the Rev. J and Mrs Pike, Yass, was celebrated at St. Clements' Church, Yass on Saturday September 9, the church being decorated with a large arch placed across the chancel steps, with white flowers and horse-shoes on each side, and the initials of the bride and bridegroom, and overhead was suspended a floral bell, beneath which the bride and bridegroom stood. The service was choral. In the absence of Bishop Barlow in another part of the Diocese, the ceremony was performed by the father of the bride. The bride's dress was of soft Duchess satin veiled with ninon, and trimmed with pearl and crystal embroideries. A wreath of orange blossoms and a tuille veil with a shower bouquet completed her toilette. The bridesmaids were the Misses G Ross and Beatrice Ross-Edwards (Tumut). Mr D. Marina, of Young and Mr S. Best acted as groomsmen. After the ceremony the guests were entertained at the rectory.

Mel75, thank you so much for that site, it is most informative.

Ann, I don't know if you've had a look at the whole site, but there are a few snippets on Joseph. One mentioned that he was going on a tour of Europe, and I wondered if this was him returning with his family? There is nothing more mentioned apart from the fact the daughter was over 12.
