hello Arthur..welcome to my Office!!...........I'm just starting on this..but have pretty well exhausted all my sources looking for AUSTIN CUPIT born about 1790 ish.....

I have reason to believe that Edward Cupit was born 07.04.1814 at Shirland....which took some finding..and that his father was AUGUSTINE CUPIT of Shirland..and since i have met the diminution of Augustine to Austin before..I shall now follow this up. have the Shirland records!!

will get back to you asap.....but I'm pretty sure its Augustine you should be looking for.
EDIT 17.49 Thursday..........I have this afternoon been out and about in exactly the places mentioned in the reords i have been looking at... (on another matter it should be said)..and it is amazing how very close to each other all of these places are............Alfreton..Shirland..Stretton..Morton and North wingfield are within walkable distance from each other....so I'm more than happy that I'm on the right track......

I need you to confirm that your Cupit family did in fact move to the sutton in Ashfield, Huthwaite area in later years????..even these are only just the other side of the M1 Motorway to Alfreton and Pinxton.....

Derek.

Hi Derek,
I have been on Genes Reunited for a few years and have only just found you.
My problem is, I have got as far back as my g.g.g.grandfather Edward Cupit who was married to Mary Mellors.
His father was Austin Cupit according to the marriage certificate but I can find no trace of him,
They were married 13th Oct. 1840 in Alfreton.
Hope you can solve this mystery.
I gather you have been ill. get well soon.
Regards
Arthur Martin.

right back on track
checked wifes grandfathers birth cert and mother def sarah benbow
check her marriage record to frederick mellor and father is def. walter benbow coach maker and in 1881 census have her listed living at home with her father in birmingham and listed as born in derby
confusion was caused by picking up on the wrong frederick and sarah mellor in 1911 census where that sarah was listed as born church gresley

terryj

terryj Report 20 Jan 2013 22:06

it was sarah benbow that was listed as born in church gressley
but i am beginning to think i have confused my frederick mellors to satisfy the family rumour so thanks for your help and i will do some more digging to make sure i am on the right track before bothering you again

thanks very much again for your time and help

Derek

Hello again terry........I don't think there is any Church Gresley link at all.

Sarah Benbow married Frederick Mellor of Aston Birmingham last Qtr 1900 at Aston..

Frederick has a clear history in Birmingham born Birmingham the son of William and Sarah Jane Mellor..............Sarah Jane from Rugby Warwickshire 1844
There WAS a Frederick Mellor born Church Gresley 1866..son of John and Mary..but he is nothing whatsoever to do with you family.

who was the mysterious missing sister????

Derek.

terryj Report 20 Jan 2013 20:05

blimmy that was quick

father was a walter benbow born c1852 kiderminster
mother was a mary a crompton born c1852 durham
married oct to dec 1873 in halifax
and living together in birmingham in 1891 census
would love to find a mellor link as when she married a mellor in birmingham there were no familiy witnesses and were listed at the same address
plus a daughter who disappeared from the family home and who my wifes grandfather thought was an aunt untill late in life he discovered she was a sister

she will be my next quarry
poss born in glossop c 1901
actual 1898 so too soon i think

Derek Report 20 Jan 2013 19:38

HelloTerry...you say you have her parents names.........they would help would they be Walter and Mary from Kidderminster?.....

If so..there are a number of anomalies..the only marriage for Walter Benbow that fits..is to MARY A CROMPTON at Halifax Yorkshire OND1873.........two different Censuses Mary A as having been born in either County Durham..or in Birmingham.
Walter Benbow was born Kidderminster 1852..and was a Coach painter.later Coach Maker..

Sarah Benbow was not born in Church Gresley..her Civil registration is at Derby............which is a registration District which does not include Church Gresley..........she may well have lived there later in her life, but was not born there.

My research is ongoing..and of course what i have given you above depends entirely on you confirming Sarah' parents...........ASAP.........

hello there just came across this thread
can't it be made a sticky so that it is allways on top of the page

anyway my request for help
wife grandfather allways thought he had a derbyshire connection and have now found his mother on the 1901 census in atherstone and listed as born in church gresley.
her name was sarah benbow and was born jan to march 1875
i have her mother and fathers name and on looking at the church gresley records available on line can find no benbows but lots of mellors her eventual married name
what i was wondering if there is any mention of mellors as witnesses etc on her parish records assuming she was baptised in church gresley as her family home was in worcester.
thanks for your time

Derek Report 20 Jan 2013 13:36

Hi Gooner.........well i haven't yet got the baptism of Thomas.....but have a fairly good idea of much of his history..It goes something like this:-

ROBERT and ELLEN AYSCOUGH were the parents of THOMAS HENRY AYSCOUGH. born 1819 Burghleigh Rutland.

Thomas Henry married Elizabeth CANNER who was baptised 10.02.1816 daughter of Robert and Susanna Canner....(Thomas henry died 14.06.1858).........these two were the parents of:
GEORGE FREDERICK AYSCOUGH 1855 Rutland......who appears to have been a railway man..hence his flitting about the country in later Censuses..

He married ELIZABETH HOLMES at Keighley 18.07.1874..she was from Keighley or Bingley depending on Censues......
and these were the parents of your Thomas born Derby 1879..the only one of their childreb who was boorn in Derby.

I believe that your Thomas married AMELIA POWNEY (one of oyur names!) in Ashby de la Zouch in 1919...and that he died in Ashby JFM 1921.....

I can fill this in a bit..but have I got it right so far???

Derek.

Looking for William Storey born in Yorkshire the 1901 census says born Scarborough 1865 but the origional record in his own hand is debateable. According to his marriage certificate it would be 1871 so he obviously lied on one of the documents
His father is listed as a cattle dealer
Hope someone can help he is my Great Grandfather

Hi Susan and jennifer..thanks for you good wishes xx

Derek Report 19 Jan 2013 20:21

Hello Sylvia.....the answer is i don't know.!!

Drusilla Marshall who died 1879 (Civil Registration) was born ABOUT 1829..which could mean anytime.....it certainly means her birth was not registered....and having looked in all the local PR's..Horsley Alfreton Denby Heanor heage Duffield.........it appears she was not baptised either......neither Calladine nor Hope.

Philip Calladine was baptised 20.02.1792 son of Philip Calladine and Patience nee Phillingham..who married at Horsley 28.11.1782
As you say..he married Sarah hope at St W.26.05.1818.

The simplest answer was that she was born about 1818..probably shortly before Philip and Sarah were married..and she was probably not baptised..which was not uncommon.......and she probably did not marry Isaac in Church, maybe because she was unbaptised..and of course by 1854 you could have a civil wedding.

sorry I can't help further.

Derek.

Hi Derek,

Hope your health is continueing to improve, if that PM was for me i never received it.

Can you help solve a long time mystery please ?

There are several Calladine trees around, but mine seems the only one with DRUCILLA on it.

Philip Calladine (c1792) and Sarah Hope (c1792) marry 26 May 1818 St Werburghs Derby, they have 7 children all baptised in Alfreton,

Hannah Hope 1821
Ann 1824
Elizabeth 1826
John 1828
Sarah 1829
William 1833
George 1835

Philip Calladine is not on any census, he dies 26 May 1841, next door neighbour in Bag lane is the informant, so i think
have the right cert, hes a drover ?? but on Hannah Hope Calladines marriage cert hes a collier

1841.. she is TRUCILLIA Calladine living with Sarah Calladine and children in Bag Lane Derby. ( Born 1818 Derbyshire)

1851...As TRUCILLA Marshall wife of Isaac Marshall with 2 children ( born 1818 Denly? Derbyshire)

5 June 1854 marries Isaac Marshall as DRUCILLA Calladine age 38...father was Philip Calladine a coal miner ( i have cert)

1861...As DRUCILD Marshall (born 1814 Alfreton Derbyshire)

1871 As PRICILLA Marshall (Born 1814 Denby Derbyshire)

As DRUSILLA at her death in 1879..Age at death 50...Born 1829 ??????

Confused yet,,,,,,No.....oh good

Questions

Was Drucilla, Philip and Sarahs child, but born before marriage ?

OR

Was Philip previously married ??

Can you please help me find Drucillas baptism please ?
