Hi LA...........James Alcock .married Hannah Hibberd daughter of Thomas .....Bakewell 25.12.1865.....He aged 20..she aged 21.......unfortunately this marriage is not in the Bakewell Parish Records.........which mean it is somewhere in the Bakewell Civil Registration area,,or it is a non-conformist marriage.....i will of course hound this out..but not necessarily tonight! !

lorraine..further to my message below..I have this to offer:-..Joseph's grandparents..

Christopher Wragg born 13.06.1710..baptised 17.06.1710 at Worksop Notts..married Mary Foster at Beighton 1737........the surname is rgeistered as Ragg..as is Christopher junior on his marriage to Mary Pinneston...almost certainly Penniston and Pinneston are the same...

Joseph Wragg married Hannah Curry 1798 Nottingham...

Derek Report 23 Jun 2011 11:28

Hello Lorraine..I have the following information from the North Wingfield Parish Registers, which I pass on to you with my usual caution bearing in mind that Christopher and Mary Pinneston did not marry until 20.12.1778.......
The children of Christopher and Mary Wragg baptised at North Wingfield were as follows;-
Sarah 09.10.1768
Ann 26.01.1770
John 23.02.1772
Benjamin 05.12.1773
William 03.11.1776
JOSEPH 02.12.1778
Christopher and Mary..both baptised 06.04.1784..which may mean they were twins..but not necessarily.......

I have a slight niggle here regarding how long these two were producing children without being married..........and then the marriage just after Joseph's baptism..then a gap of six years.......to Christopher and Mary.......it seems unlikely that there were two separate families...and no records of any other marriages....but it still niggles a bit..

But remember that these dates are BAPTISMS..not Births..and any of these children could be weeks or months older than their baptism dates...

CHRISTOPHER WRAGG buried NW 21.09.1800
MARY WRAGG wife of CHRISTOPHER buried NW 25.06.1793

I have no information on Christopher except he was born 27.12.1752 son of Christopher..and Mary Pinneston may have been born Chesterfield 1753....(Mary Penniston)

Hello Lorraine....nice to hear from you again..........Joseph Wragg ....from RIPLEY????? you sure??....rather threw me for a while........but with an uncommon name like Pinneston..I went looking........here's what |i found.......

JOSEPH WRAGG baptised NORTH WINGFIELD 02.12.1778..son of Christopher Wragg and Mary..........

North Wingfield is nowhere near Ripley.but is close to Chesterfield..as is Beighton........

CHRISTOPHER WRAGG baptised Beighton..27.12.1752..son of Christopher Wragg.....married MARY PINNESTON at Beighton 20.12.1778...........soon after she apparently gave birth to Joseph........Beighton and North Wingfield are within spitting distance of each other.....

derek.

Good Evening Derek, nice to see you posting. I have left you a bit of homework on your other thread :-)

Derek

Derek Report 22 Jun 2011 22:11

Hello Aunty.....normally this would be easy..but of course it's not.although Yorkshire is manifestly not Derbyshire..I do originate from Yorkshire.......and just by way of stating my provenance...not to sound clever or grand...I am a Place-name addict..and Anglo-Saxon scholar..and avid student of the Domesday Book ......all three put together would give you ton...or tun......
..ing.....meaning the people of....and Haerl..or Harl..or Hearla...or variations............meaning the tun or settlement of the people of Haearla.....a very common Anglo-saxon name type........which means that such a place should be in the Domesday Book...........which it ain't!

Trouble is that Barnsley..or Burneslie (1086) is in the DB......and the name construction with lie or ley on the end is Danish..not Anglo-Saxon...........and Barnsley...along with the whole of South Yorkshire and Derbyshire...etc..was bang slap in the Danelaw..........

..so all in all...Harlington appears not to be an old name....although it WAS a village and joint Parish with Barnburgh........

..which is a very longwinded way of saying........I can't answer your question!! lol

all the best.

Derek.

Geographically challenged Australian here!! Is Yorkshire, specifically Harlington (or Harlington Barnsley) close enough to Derbyshire to ask a question??

Quite a simple question. Was the town/city of Harlington named after the family, or was the family named after the town.
How on earth does one find out.

Tracey Report 12 Jun 2011 16:10

hi derek, strange is that, at moment cant find any info on grace, so it strange why mother's name not on. might have to get in touch with vicar of the church to see if they can trace the baptisms. stuck as well as you, wot might is trace the fathers see if i can find any marriages for either john. thank you for looking for me.

Derek

Derek Report 12 Jun 2011 14:47

Hello Tracey..very odd this one!!..I have the Old Brampton Records..and have both christenings:

JOHN BENNETT bapt.04.07.1784
GRACE KEY bapt. 09/03.1783..............both entries only have the father stated..and bot are called JOHN!!........and there are a number of other baptisms for BENNETT within s few years..all with the father JOHN....

Have looked elsewhere (IGI) and get the same results..which is not surprising because if original Parish records don't have the answer...neither will other sources..all of whom depend initially on Parish records....

John and Grace married at Old Brampton 15.10.1810...but appear not to have had any children there...........

Let me know any ideas you might have.

Derek.
