Hi, if you Google Plessey UK Wikipedia has a lot of information on the Company, who took it over and its history. It might help with who you may contact from the Company now.

Just go in on line and have a read. It might mean nothing, but it could help.

Good luck,

Sappho

If you think she may still have the same e-mail address.....click on her name and send a message.

The chances of anyone connected seeing your message on here are minimal

Look for info at Friends Reunited...............it has a workplace section

Or Google......................

I am also trying to find ex work mates of my late husband Michael Edmonds.
He worked at Wood Burcot from 1976-1984
Sadly Michael died from Mesothelioma , when he worked at Wood Burcot buildings were being refurbished, removal of asbestos.
I am just looking for people who. Remember this or the name of a solicitor who has acted in the cases related to Plessey. Wood Burcot.

Best of luck Audrey. You didn't say whether he was in a union so I'm guessing not? They would be a good place to start if he was.

As Janey says - you are very welcome -let us know if we can help further!!!

Best wishes to you, and your husband. - I know from personal experience how frightening it can be to have such breathing problems!!

I hope he is in the care of someone who can help keep it under control.

Dear Researchers,
Many thanks for all your efforts on my behalf. You really are wonderful
ladies.
I made a mistake saying it was the solicitor who asked for all the
details. We had to fill in a very long form and send it to the Job Centre
in Nottingham. A lady there sent a letter back saying it would speed
things up if we could give her full names and addresses for any
workmates, so they could prove he worked there, and conditions
were as he said. We sent a letter back on Thursday with details of
the mens names, and the villages that my husband thought they lived
in at the time. However, | may contact the local media as you suggested
in case she writes back saying that wasn't good enough.
So, once again, your help is very much appreciated, especially as it
wasn't looking up relatives as you usually do.
Kindest Regards
Audrey Alborn

http://www.lkaz.demon.co.uk/ban72.htm

"A claim brought by the surviving family of Margaret Littlemore resulted in a substantial settlement even though the negligent employer had ceased trading. Mrs. Littlemore, who died of mesothelioma less than 3 months after having been diagnosed, was exposed to asbestos as an employee at the Plessey Factory on North Hyton Road, Sunderland during the late 1960s / early 1970s. Crucial evidence was provided by former workmates about the hazardous exposures at the plant."

This is the footnote to that passage:

12 Irwin Mitchell Solicitors Press Release. Husband Wins Compensation for Mesothelioma Death. October 7, 2008.
http://www.irwinmitchell.com/PressOffice/PressReleases/Husband-
Wins-Compensation-For-Mesothelioma-Death.htm

The press release doesn't seem to be on line any more, but this is the website for the solicitors:

http://www.irwinmitchell.com/mediacentre/Pages/default.aspx

I searched for Plessey and it returned nothing.

But if you search for asbestos, there are lots.

This one is interesting.

Death caused by mesothelioma

18/05/2006

The widow of a former metallurgist employed by Rolls Royce in Derby, who died after being exposed to asbestos at work, is appealing for his former work colleagues to come forward, to help in her fight for justice.

... Alida Coates, from national law firm, Irwin Mitchell, is representing Mrs Walker in her claim for compensation. She explained: Mr Walker was only 59 when he died from complications associated with mesothelioma.

... We are particularly interested in tracing Mr Ian Watson, a friend of Mr Walker who may be able to assist our investigations. He is pictured in the photograph and was best man at the wedding of Dick and Ann in 1974.

Here's another one from the list:

http://www.irwinmitchell.com/mediacentre/Pages/NewsViewer.aspx?item=2891

28/04/2009

The widow of a Surrey brewery worker, who died after being exposed asbestos, is appealing for former workmates to get in touch, to help her with her claim for compensation.

And there are numerous other press releases there about searches for former workmates.

So -- maybe your solicitor should look and learn, and try the same thing! But you contacting the local media personally might be just as good if not better.

Yeah. I agree with Lindsey too. ;)

Can he really be the first who has brought action against the employer?

Dea

Dea Report 4 Nov 2009 18:56

I agree with Lindsey,

Get onto the local press and ask for help in tracing the people who worked for Plessey at that time.

It sounds like there will be a few of them who are in the same situation.

Sounds like a job for the Northampton local press or TV ,

Plessey themselves are huge arent going to be any help if you are blaming them for a workplace injury.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 4 Nov 2009 18:49

I agree with Minnie, no harm in trying.

If you could give the name and village, plus the names of any spouses or children he knows, we can always take a shot.

All the info would have to be sent to you by private message of course, so anyone who researched a name could identify the name they are trying, here in the thread.

Since it is so long ago it is quite likely some of his workmates are deceased. It could be possible to identify their children, we we could find the workmate's marriage and spouse's name. The children might be the best sources for info about a workmate's death. (A death is the first thing I would try to find, for this.)

It is a bit of a complex thing, but no harm in trying.

I don't know whether to agree with Freewheel - it does seem like a bit of a thing to lumber you with. I wonder whether the solicitor meant to do that only for anyone for whom you do have contact details now? Surely s/he realizes that some if not most of them are likely to have died at this point.

I'd have thought Plessey themselves would be a better bet.

brummiejan Report 4 Nov 2009 17:14

Surely this can't be right. I wonder where you found this solicitor! I'd make an enquiry at the Citizen's Advice Bureau, they might offer more impartial advice.
Also, did he belong to a union?

Audrey Report 4 Nov 2009 17:01

Dear Researchers,
You have helped me before, for which I am very grateful, but now
would like to ask for more help in a different way.
My husband has been diagnosed with Diffuse Pleural
Thickening, which means the wall of his lung is thicker, and
it makes it difficult for him to breathe. This was caused by him
working at The Plessey Company in Northampton and
Wood Burcot, Northants from 1952 to 1961. When he worked
there, he says asbestos dust was floating in the air, which has caused this problem. The doctor advised him to make a claim,
which he has done. However, the solicitor dealing with his case,
says he must provide full names and addresses of any work
colleagues who can confirm his employment and working
conditions at the Plessey.
As you might imagine, he hasn't kept in touch with his work-
mates over the last 50 years, and doesn't know how to get in
touch with them. I know it's a very big ask, but I wondered if
you good ladies would be able to help me.
If I gave you a list of names, with the villages where he thinks they
lived during those dates, would it be possible to find their present
addresses?
I know miracles take a little longer.
Kind Regards
Audrey Alborn
