Not sure if this is still current as it is 4 years old.

I had always believed that James Kirkpatrick was one of 19 children of William Kirkpatrick of Conheath, who was a descendant of the Kirkpatricks of Kirkmichael and Mary Sutton. (James being brother of the famous William, the US Consul at Malaga and grandfather of the Empress Eugenie). This is from a handwritten tree at least 80 years old which now belongs to my cousin.

According to this tree, James married a Jane Gillibrand.

However, the official Kirkpatrick genealogy (which I have only recently looked at) has no record of a James amongst the 19 (although it and my cousin's are identical up to that point).

I am descended from Thomas' daughter Annie Kirkpatrick, b. 1837, who married another cotton magnate in Tyldesley, Caleb Wright. Annie's granddaughter (my grandmother) who died at 101 in 1992, remembered going to stay with Kirkpatrick relations in Dumfriesshire when she was a girl, i.e. about 1910, at a house north of Dumfries called Dildawn.

Have you tried to find a Scottish death for Helen?

As females retain their birth identity her death will be registered in both her maiden and married names.

Tombul Report 22 Dec 2009 15:26

I tried to find marriages in the OPR's and the only one I could see for any of the characters was one for a Samuel Kirkpatrick to a Mary Heron on 28 July 1774 at Lochrutton in Dumfriesshire.

I don't know if this is the same Samuel or not

Did James and Helen have any kids prior to Thomas? Where they born in Scotland?

Kath & mgnv, many thanks for taking the time to help.

Kath
Thomas's parents are James kirkpatrick & Helen Urquhart, this information has come from family records passed down to me.

Thomas & Mary had 8 children, you have found them all. The names that recur down the family are;
James, Thomas, Edward.

Helen, the last child born, who only lived for 2 weeks, is named after her grandmother.

It’s quite strange, I have not managed to find a single record for either James or Helen before the birth of Thomas.

Mgnv
The marriage record you found is the one for my Thomas & Mary.

The witness’s;
Richard J Jones was the owner of a cotton mill, Thomas Kirkpatrick was apprenticed to him.

Joseph Kirkpatrick is another mystery, I have only found him on this marriage record, and the name is not used in my family line.

Lanc’s OPC, I have searched parish every record on the site, found loads of info, but nothing for my James & Helen.

Again many thanks for your help.

Cheers

Since your name differs slightly from this, I'm guessing you haven't done a search for, say, Kirkpatrick at:
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html

Marriage: 21 Jan 1829 St Mary the Virgin, Leigh, Lancashire, England
Thomas Kirkpatrick - of Leigh Parish
Mary Kay Sutcliffe - of Leigh Parish
Witness: Richd. J. Jones; Joseph Kirkpatrick
Married by Licence with Consent of Parties by: Jonathan Topping Vicar
Register: Marriages 1825 - 1832, Page 166, Entry 498
Source: LDS Film 559188

I didn't spot any earlier stuff, but I guess there's plenty of relevant later stuff

Who's Joseph?

Hi Grahame,
Are you sure that Thomas's parents are James & Helen Urquhart?
Can I ask how you got this information?

I just can't seem to find a marriage for these people anywhere.

Is this Thomas & Mary's children?

EDWARD 1829
JAMES 1831
HENRY 1832
JANE 1836
ANNIE 1837
JOHN 1840
CATHERINE MARY 1842
HELEN 1843

Did they have anymore children & if so, When?

I am trying to sort out the naming pattern.

Hello Kath, many thanks for the reply, this is all i have;

I have all the family info from Thomas to the present day, i cant find a thing about James Kirkpatrick and Helen Urquhart, or James father , Samuel who is rumoured to be from the Dumfries area.

Samuel Kirkpatrick (Dumfries area)

son James Kirkpatrick married Helen Urquhart (no date or location)

James son Thomas born 17/11/1806 Atherton Lancashire

Thomas married Mary Fray Sutcliff in 1829 at Leigh Lancashire.

I have hit a total brick wall, cant find any info back before 1806.

cheers

Hi again Grahame,
Can you tell me what info you have leading up to Thomas Kirkpatrick b. 1806 Wigan, also James Kirkpatrick & Helen Urquhart being his parents.

If you give a bit more information we might be able to help you.

Kind Regards
Kath

This is a real long shot, but it might just shake a branch on someone’s tree.

I have a James Kirkpatrick married to Helen Urquhart no date or location
son Thomas born 1806 Wigan.

James father was a Samuel Kirkpatrick said to be from Auckenleck c1750

I’m trying to find any info pre 1806.

Any hints or tips, would be much appreciated.
