Harriet and Edward Lees are alive and well in 1881 with a load of offspring, so not her. ;) (Could still be the Lees-Bradley marriage some other way.)

My understanding is that women's birth surnames aren't usually on death certs, but I may be wrong - and it may vary.

I came to the conclusion of the bradley - lees marriage but then i sent off for John's birth certificate and it came back as Harriet Bradley formarly Potter. Would maiden names be given on a death certificate because i can send off for Harriet's?????

If Harriet had been previously married, this possible marriage would certainly be consistent with son Henry's birth:

Marriages Sep 1873
? Bradley Henry Ashton 8d 949
Hodgson Sarah Ann Ashton under Lyne 8d 949
? LEES Harriet Ann Ashton 8d 949
WATERHOUSE Alfred Ashton 8d 949

... but no Lees-Potter marriage to make it work.

Son John's birth for ref -- you've seen all these things, Danielle, but we ain't! This is him?

Births Mar 1883
Bradley John Humphrey Ashton 8d 492

= Ashton under Lyne

And son Henry in standard form for good measure:

Births Jun 1875
Bradley Henry Chester 8a 422

Thank you, Henry jnr was born June quarter of 1875
Chester 8a 422 may have to do a little more digging to find out what is going on can't find a birth for Mary Bradley either but i know she married someone called white between 1891 and 1901.....

We did have the 1891 twice already. ;)

And that 1875 record is a marriage!

Given the gap between Mary and John, I might suspect that Henry and Harriett only got together during that gap, and the older children belong to one or the other of them, but not both. So Harriett could have had a previous marriage, and in fact still been married to a first husband, precluding a marriage to Henry. Ditto Henry, of course.

When my great grandfather John Bradley (b.1883) married he put his father (henry) down as been a firewood hawker, is this the same as a chip chopper???? Still none the wiser as to Harriet Potter though????

Can't speak for anybody else, but I just can't reproduce your 1891 results! I'm looking at Ancestry. They may be mistranscribed somehow.

Can you please give us John's date and *place* of birth as stated on the 1891 census? Also Harriet's and Henry's -- these will help locate them, and it really is important to know those things, to do searches in other years.

Oookay, tried again and they magically appeared - in Holbeck, 1891:

Henry Bradley 56 - born Nottingham
- occupation Chip Chopper
Harriett Bradley 38 - born - haha - "Staff, Tunisia"
H??Y Bradley 15 - born Chester
- occupation Chip Chopper and Hawker
Mary H Bradley 14 - born North Shields
- occupation ditto
John H Bradley 8 - born "Asthonulpe", Lancashire (Ashton u. Lyne)
Albert Bradley 2 - born Leeds

I have Henry and Harriet together on the 1891 census in Holbeck, Leeds along with there children, Henry, Mary, John and Albert. They are living in a caravan. On the 1901 census Henry is widowed and i think Harriet died about 1898.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 21 Oct 2009 20:23

Do you have them together anywhere in a census? I've had no luck in 71 or 81 ... or 91.

It is son John's birth cert that gives the names? Can you say where you have Harriet's birth year and place from? The only Potters in the censuses born in Tunstall were born after 1870. Where was son John born?

Have you identified son John's marriage, assuming he married? The marriage certificate might (but might not) state a father's name.
