AUGUSTA BUCKLEY

Janice Report 2 Sep 2013 03:42

Hi,
In July, my previous post was lamenting the dearth of evidence about the birth and parentage of Augusta Buckley. I'm nearly certain that I've found her.

There is a record of an 'Augusta Buckly' (spelled without an e) with siblings 'William Buckley' and 'Frederick Buckley' being born in Polebrook, Northamptonshire. Her birth date is given as 17 Feb 1782 and here parents as William & Mary Buckley. The father's name agrees with one of the marriage reports of Augusta's wedding that recorded her father as being a Wm Buckley Esquire. The Northamptonshire address also fits with the fact that Augusta's death was reported not only in the Berkshire newspapers but also in the Northhamptonshire papers.

And...although Nothamptonshire address seems NOT to fit with John & Augusta's wedding in Bath, there is a newspaper advertisement of 1793 showing William Buckley Esq and family selling their household effects before leaving Northamptonshire for another county. Seeing that there was another Buckley family in Bath at the time (with children's names Mary, Charles & George, and father's name Charles) who may have been related, it's possible that William and his family moved to Somerset.

All still to be proved with more concrete evidence, but at least it's something to go on with.
Regards Jan

Hi,
Has found anything more on this old topic of Augusta Buckley (my ggggrandmother). I've been searching for her too and am certain only about her marriage to John Prettejohn in Bathwick in Somerset in 1801, the birth of her children and her death in Reading in Berkshire in 1835 (which preceded John's marriage to Laura Cole in 1840).
...And, Brian, I'm a descendant of Henry and Rose too and am intrigued by the letter you mention and the reason Henry gives for his emigration? I had been wondering whether the reason might have had something to do with his father's impending marriage to Laura Cole. Henry left England in Dec. 1839 - Laura and his father married just a few months later in April 1840. One would think that if Henry were happy about the marriage, he would have waited till after the wedding before he left England. And it might not be that he was just unhappy about his father's remarriage per se, but unhappy about his marriage to Laura Cole in particular. Henry and Laura were almost the same age (Henry 4 years older) so perhaps Henry was interested in Laura Cole himself. Considering that he didn't marry for another 6 years, perhaps that's a possibility.

Anyway, if anyone has any light to shed on Augusta's parentage, I'd love to hear from them.

Thankyou Sylvia

Wow ! You have been busy .... and you seem to have come to the same conclusion re Augusta Buckley that I have .... magical appearance ! ... but you definitely have the right Augusta Buckley .... just no apparent birth record

I have most of the details you mentioned re the Prettejohn family ... and considerably more data. I have been researching Prettejohn family for several months ... the Henry Prettejohn/Rose Bromley you mentioned were my Great Great Grandparents .... the John etc also in my direct ancestry extending back to Barbados (including the slavery aspect) and to Devon

John's first marriage was to Augusta Buckley (m 1802) ... his second marriage was to Laura Cole (m 1840). It is interesting that you found Augusta's death as 1853 ... I found two death records for an Augusta Prettejohn - 1835 and 1853 .... and given that John Prettejohn's second marriage to Laura Cole (m 1840) I thought that the 1835 entry was the most likely ... maybe I was wrong.

I do know that John and Augusta's son Henry sailed for Australia (South Australia) on the 'Morley' in 1840 .... and have a copy of a document in which Henry admits 'fault' for something that happened back in England .... maybe that is why he left England to start a new life. Unfortunately what he admitted 'fault' for remains an unsolved mystery.

Back to Augusta Buckley ... will check your 'rootsweb' suggestion

Thanks Sylvia and Ann

Best wishes

For example, I looked at the first Captain ................... the heading on the page showed that these were the property of John Prettejohn, deceased, Charlotte Prettejohn Executrix ..... presumably the parents of John b.ca 1778.

Unfortunately, all major events in her life ... birth, marriage and death ..... occurred before official registration began on July 1 1837

This means that you will not find any certificates or such.

You are down to findign records in parish registers ...... and hoping that the vicar might have made notes in the margin of the register, eg date of birth.

Hi Ann

Thanks for replying

The date of marriage is correct .... and spouse is most likely correct, although I have found the Prettejohn surname spelt aboout seven different ways (but research says same family - same parentage, same locations of birth)

My understanding is that Augusta Buckley married John Prettejohn on 23 November, 1801 at Barbados.... but maybe she was married at Bathwick, (Somerset) ... as you have found. This has been a puzzle.

Her husband John Prettejohn was born in Barbados, West Indies. John's father (also John - born c 1731) was born in Devon, England, but married 1771 (Charlotte Worsham) and died in Barbados (1800). Research tells me that the Prettejohn family were originally from Devon, England. I have that line of ancestry back to c1557

It is details of Augusta Buckley that I am now trying to research .... birth date & location, parents etc

Any help you can give is appreciated

Thankyou

Best wishes

Grooms Parish Bath SS Peter& Paul
Bride Augusta Buckley

By lic 23/11/1801 at Bathwick (Somerset marriages)

EDIT. Not sure if I am reading your post correctly, is it himself that was born BARBADOS!

I am seeking date/place of birth and parents of Augusta Buckley.

I believe she married John Prettejohn (born c 1778) on 23 November, 1801 at Barbados, West Indies

I believe she died 12 November, 1835 at Reading, England

Her children seem to have been born around Hare Hatch or Hurst in Berkshire, England

I have looked on GR 'Search Trees', GR 'Search Records', .... have 'googled', and have looked on FreeBMD and Family Search

Any help would be appreciated ..... thank you
