Victoria Report 16 Oct 2009 14:09

Hi
I am trying to tie up one side of the family and would just like to ask if anyone can help. I have a Laura Jones Rogers born in 1843, Caernarfon to Hugh and Grace Rogers. I know she married a ships captain and went to sea with him, and that she had 2 daughters (possibly other children). I believe the daughters were called Margaret and Lowri (Lowry) but this could be inaccurate.

I think I have found her marriage Laura Rogers in 1866, Anglesey to either a Richard Hughes or Hugh Williams.

I was hoping to find her under with Laura Williams or Laura Hughes on a census to confirm that her husband was a mariner and trace the children but have had no success. I have also failed dismally to trace the births of any children under both these names (ancestry and familysearch mainly).

The whole of Laura Rogers family were mariners or married to mariners, and seemed to be either found in Bangor, caernarfon or Anglesey, or Liverpool or they have gone to sea with many ending up in Shanghai.

Having said all this I am may be barking up the wrong tree as her father was a ships Captain and 2 of Laura's sisters got married on board their fathers ship, so I guess this is a possibility for Laura as well. Her father was master of the Glenmannia. I am also aware the children may have been born 'at sea' or aboard.

Can anyone help, have I missed something with her marriage and then married life.

Thanks

Vicki

Try contacting the shipping line or owners of the vessel, they may still have the ships log books which would state the details of amy marriage performed at sea

On the 1871 census for Richard he is a Quarryman.

Neither of the men listed with wife Laura are anything to do with the sea as far as I can see BUT the one with Laura J was a lot older than her and a retired Trader so does that mean he was to do with the sea??

You said she had daughters Lowri?? could be Laura. Griffith Rogers was a farmer.

can i pls ask where you source all your information from! I have spent months searching for stuff, yet in less than an hour you have all found all this out, Mel thanks for christening record & Barbara, the other ones are great, especially the christening date of Elizabeth as there are a few Elizabeth Rogers so wasn't sure which was mine and Sarah Ellen is one i never knew about. I did know that there was a girl who died as an infant so i now wonder if this was Sarah Ellen, i had assumed it was Elizabeth as she is the only one there doesnt seem to be any family history on. So now a new one to research! Also i have a Hugh Rogers born 1854 and a Samuel Rogers born 1855 who are definately children of Hugh and Grace as well.

But all this is'nt helping us find Laura Jones Rogers.

The only thing I can sujest is to order the marriage cert for Laura Jones Rogers and say you only want it if Laura's father is Hugh a sea captain.

Victoria

Victoria Report 16 Oct 2009 17:56

All that has been a fantastic help, Hugh and Grace are not easy to find on the census' I think it is the 1851 one that Grace is down as Gredel Royers!

As for all the possible leads on Laura Jones Rogers this has been a great help and I didnt even think of ordering the marriage certificate, think this might be the way forward, I had been hoping to confirm if she really did have 2 daugthers by the names of Lowri and Margaret, all I know is she married a ships Captain and went to sea with him for some time, which is all quite vague!

Thank you

Vicki

Stuart Report 27 Sep 2015 17:21

I am researching for descendants of Captain Robert Jones who was the Captain of the Clipper Ship Teviotdale in 1876. His address on the ships manifest was given as 3 Britannia Terrace Anglesea.

Any help appreciated
