Hi Cheryl and welcome to the boards. As I posted above, Julia's thread is quite an old one and she may no longer be watching it. If you click on her name, you can send her a message and if she still has the same email address, GR will advise of the message.

I'm related to this family of Carolans. They came from Tristia in Mayo. My 2x great grandmother Mary Carolan was born in 1832 and died in Lancashire in 1893. Her daughter, my great grandmother, named one of her children Hugh Carlin. Would love to hear from you Julia.

Regards,

Cheryl

Anne, this is a slightly old thread - might be better to contact Anne direct - click on her name in her post.

If you need help with your research, why don't you start a thread of your own. Put in everything you know about the people you are looking for and say what it is you are looking for, eg looking for ancestors or looking for descendants.

Hi Thanks for that, I must admit that I had no idea as to what / where these names referred to. I know I should hang my head - my excuse is that there was never any mention of Ireland at home. My fathers parents were both born in England and the grandparents had passed away by the time my father's generation came along.
My father always dreamt of visiting Eire but never managed to do so.

Evening Julia....No you were not the cause of the burnt dinner.. I do it every Sunday...even burnt a salad before today.....!!!
Sorry I made mistake with the spelling for "Killary"...(well I didnt but the transcriber did)...should read Killala...which is a Townland in the Barony of Tirawley..it is also a Civil Parish ...the village is just North of Ballina.
Kilcommon is in the North West of the Co.Mayo not far from Knock Airport
It is a Civil Parish in the Barony of Erris and Tristia is a Townland within Kilcommon...so you may well be onto something.....

Hi Erin

Please forgive my lack of knowledge about Ireland and Eire. Whereabouts is Killary?

I have found one scrap of paper (in my own scrawl) with Bridget's name along side "Tristia Killcommon Mayo / Gifford records" ?
Also a question mark regarding other possible siblings one of them being Patrick?

I must have picked that possible info / link somewhere, but for the sake of me I have no recollection of where / when for finding this info nor of writting this down.

Could it be of some use though?

Hi Erin

I do hope I was not the reason for burnt lunch!

I had expected that the Carlin / Carolin / Carolan name would be more problematical due to the spelling variations.

I have wondered if both John and Bridget were the last remaining members of their families by the time they were in England in 1856 also could the family have ceased to exist after the 1845 potato famine?

Eringobragh1916 Report 11 Oct 2009 15:08

Julia..No need to apologise...I have just been after burning the Sunday Joint anyway...!!! The "Carolin" Surname would be what you are after looking at...There are no Carlin's listed for the Co.Mayo (1901 Census) although there were 3 listed for the Co.Donegal..I have found a couple of Carlin's early 1880 but that spelling does not derive from Connaught but from the North.....Have found no BDM's with the spelling Carlin in the Co.Mayo....the only one I have found so far was Patrick Carlin born Killary Parish (1817) and that was from his Naturalization Declaration in Troy NY 1847...(marvelous what you can find when you not even looking...)
Will be back after I manage to sort the Dinner out.....

Hi Erin

I forgot to add in that they appeared in the Newcastle Under Lyme census as living in Stoke on Trent. They remained within that area, with only local house moves.

Thank you again for your help.

Hi Erin
Thank you for the reply. I am sorry I couldn't reply earlier, I had to go out for a while.

The info I have available;
John Shaughnessy and Bridget Carlin married in Newcastle under Lyme on 2.6.1856 - a marriage certificate exists stating that John's was born in Galway and his father was William Shaughnessy (consistent spelling) and Bridget was born in MAYO and her father was Bryan Carolin (various spellings).
Bridget has a brother by the name of Hugh CAROLIN

They first appeared in the 1861 census already married and with two young daughters of 3 and 5 yrs (both born in England).
I know they were Catholics. they must have arrived in the UK before 1856, but I have no idea how long they were here before marrying.
Thank you for your offer of help

Eringobragh1916 Report 11 Oct 2009 12:16

Julia....Start with what you already know about them....Have you located them on any British Census..if so when and where..did they marry in Ireland and did they have any children there? Finding anything about their roots will be about a 10% chance of success and thats if you already know where they came from...Post what you have and we can take it from there.I have plenty "old" records from the Co's Mayo and Galway so may just be able to find something....

Hi can anyone please help.
I know my ggparents John Shaughnessy (1826) and Bridget Carlin (1830) came from Galway and Mayo respectively, but I have no information as to which parish / community they were born into. All I do know is they were both Catholic.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I locate their birth places in either county.
I have tried Irish roots site for both counties as well as Irish records, but have had no success. thanks Julia
