Find Ancestors

I am trying to research my EDWARDS side of the family that reside in Cwmbran, Monmouthshire during the beginning of 20th Century. I believe that the head of the household William as stated in 1901/1891 census was born in Hereford. If anybody can advise where i should take my research from here i would much appreciate it. I have managed to find a possible marriage in monmouth jun1876. As for births/deaths further census searches i am stuck. All help much appreciated in advance

Stephen, what do you have that you are certain of so far? If you are able to copy and paste census details for 1891, say, that would help us focus on the family. Have any of the children got distinctive names? A birth cert might be the key to the marriage as you will have mother's maiden name.

I sympathise with your search. I too have ancestors who moved from Hereford to Monmouthshire, and there only seem to be about 4 surnames around those parts!!.

From here i have found them in 1891 census and identified a number of the childrens births. This is all i have i am afraid. Looking for Williams ancestors now? Just not sure where to look and what for as there really are so many. I am not even sure that the marriarge that i have found is them!

Thought I'd see if children's births registered in Newport, which from these seems a good chance.

Following on ....some time later!!!!

I have spoken to my mums cousin who i have never met before, he recalls being related to the Baird family.( HIs fathers cousins. They lived opposite each other i think.)

I have found the connection - the marriage of Pheobe Edwards to a Robert w Baird in 1902 Pontypool( correct location, same sort of dates).

Pheobe Edwards' Mother is Emma Edwards married to Charles Edwards-Pheobes father. Emma later married John Baird(1895)

I feel that perhaps Charles Edwards(1850 above born in wiltshire) could possibly be the brother of William Edwards(1856 born in hereford), my ggrandfather?

I have searched the census on this site back to front hoping to find a connection, to no avail. Was wondering if anybody could assist? i appreciate that other GR members have alternative search facilities, any help will be greatly appreciated.

yes it is but the census i posted say's where they are born your census does not say

Sarah Ann is from Brierley Hill mistranscribed by the look of it in 1911. It's now West Midlands but was Staffordshire and part of the Black Country. The area is well known for the foundries and William was a puddler. Could he have gone to the area to work and met Sarah Ann?
I have found a marriage that is possibly the couple. It is registered in Dudley. In the area some are registered in Stourbridge others Dudley, you have to check both as I've found. My paternal line is Dudley/Kingswinford and Brierley Hill.

William is a common name so is Edwards, Sarah Ann very common. Buy a birth cert one of their children to confirm the mother's maiden name but don't restrict where you look for the marriage.
