We can't find the birth certificate record for my great grandfather. He didn't see any of his family or talk about them so it's a mystery. We do know from his military records that his date of birth was 29 July 1885 and that he was born in Clerkenwell. We believe his father was called Harry or Henry from his marriage certificate. Can anyone help? What would Clerkenwell have come under?

thanks
Katy

Have checked 1891 census and 1901 census and cannot find Fredrick with a father Henry/Harry.

Tried looking for births, it is a mine field of Fredrick Jacksons with those dates. The closest I could get is for St Pancras which could have been the registration district.

Back on this search. None of our family can confirm his birth details.

We were told that he played with Charlie Chaplin as a kid and lived on Kennington Road but can't find anything with those records.

When did he marry?

Who did he marry?

What was his occupation at the time?

What was his father's occupation?

Who witnessed the marriage?

If we are to help, you need to tell us everything which could be relevant

(from above 'Thread')

Frederick Jackson, born around 1883 to 1886 born or so he claims Clerkenwell. Married to Alice Moore in 1907, have marriage cert. Known for sure to have had two brothers, names unknown

Served in the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry during WW1, his record is in the Burnt Records, Army number 18293, enlisted 5th February 1915 and discharged 20th August 1915 due to permanent injury, war wound. Died in sidcup 1959 alleged age 73. Have his medal records, he got the Pip, Squeak and Whistle medals. Family story goes that Fred was disinherited from the family because he married beneath his station, Fred was very highly educated, this we do no for sure. On the 1911 census he says born Clerkenwell.

So.....father deceased, no family members as witnesses...........illegitimate?

Highly educated.............working as a waiter? Not impossible, but unlikely, I'd have thought

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 9 May 2015 04:39

How do you know he was highly educated????

Many of his generation did not get much formal schooling, but they educated themselves after work and at weekends, went to what we later called night school, read widely, etc etc ............ and even spoke quite "proper", ie without much of an accent.

Unless you have paper proof of his education, then he could have done as so many others did.

Was hoping Katy might reply to say if other 'Thread' relates to her Frederick...

Not seeing that Burnt Record on FMP (am sure they have some) wondered if an address for him survived on it. And, as we have found before from documents, Birthdate isn't always correct!.
