Hi Nicola,
I don't know if you're still researching but Richard Bonniston (Burniston) is my 2x g grandfather. Martha, his daughter, by Martha (Johnson bn 1816) married John Manners. I don't know if we haven't communicated on Genes reunited before but I have some further info on the Burniston line that I am trying to pull together.

I dont suppose i'll ever find out for sure. Its really obvious that most people were illiterate because of the variations in the spelling of surnames. If John spent his life in service he would have not needed to read or write, maybe thats why hes missing from the census, frustrating though.

John is still a mystery. The nearest I can get is a John Mannear. Often mistranscribed as Menear/Mennear.

Or a John Manor of Bodmin.

Got the cert and dont know where to go next !
John Manners ,40, married Martha Bonniston,26, on 27.10.1878 at what looks to be Sheffield Parish Church. Johns occupations listed as coachman, nothing against Marthas. He lived at Mickleover and her at what looks to be Broomhall Sheffield. Johns fathers also John Manners [ something different would have been more of a help!] , soldier ,deceased. Marthas fathers Richard Bonniston, tailor deceased.
The witnesses were William and Mary Gretton [ I think !]
If youve any ideas were to go from here Id be grateful

Thats something Id never considered. My gran seemed to think that hed been disowned by his family for some reason and even suggested that he was connected with the Duke of Rutlands family! I hope the marriage cert comes soon

Could John perhaps be using a step fathers name?

Update - probably not. He's a bootmaker.

There is a site called Genogold which has a lot of parish records online, including Cornwall.

Can someone find a birth for me . John Manners 1838 believed to have been born in Constantine nr Falmouth. I know about him after 1878 but cant find his birth or him on census in 51, 61 or 71!
