Hilary Report 6 Feb 2009 16:22

I hope someone can help return a book to its rightful family.

I work in a library and a book - 'The Holy Bible … translated into Tamil' - was found in stock destined for withdrawal. What made this one special is that there is an inscription on the flyleaf, as follows:-

"To Paul M Pascall Esq., B.A. (Oxon)
Vice-President, St Paul's Bible Union, Vepery
Presented by the Members of St Paul's Bible Union,
Vepery, Madras
On the eve of his departure from Madras
15th December 1914
Benedictis Domini tecum semper sit."

My colleague who actually unearthed the book did a bit of research. We think Paul studied Theology at Oxford and went to India after the 1911 census. He enlisted with the Middlesex Regiment. At the time of his death on 13th January 1918, he was a Lieutenant with the Kings African Rifles aged 26 and had been awarded the MC (Military Cross?) He was buried in the Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery.

The book itself has suffered damage over the years. A few of the early pages have been nibbled and the body of the book and the spine are in danger of parting company.

If a member of Paul's family would like to contact me, the Library would be delighted to send the book home.

I've pm'd the only member that lists Paul Mervyn Pascall in her tree so with luck she'll get to see Hilary's post.

Is this still available? If so I will try and find the nearest living relative.
