Denis O’Brien of Midleton, Co Cork, Ireland

I am trying to find information on my great-great uncle, (i.e. my maternal grandfather’s paternal uncle) DENIS O’BRIEN. He was probably born in Midleton, County Cork in Southern Ireland but I am unsure of the date.

I only have his date of death which was 11 April 1974. My own granddad would have been in his 70s then so I am guessing that Denis O’Brien would have been about 90.

He owned a shop on St Mary’s Road, Midleton and I can remember meeting him when I was a little girl (sometime in the 1970s) and I can remember him as a very old man. He still ran his shop (which I think could have been a sweet shop) until he was in his 90s. I can also remember there being a convent across the road. I think it could have been a Sisters of Mercy convent.

Funnily enough my grandfather’s brother (who was also called Denis O’Brien) lived at St Mary’s Road in Midleton too.

I have asked relatives about that side of the family but none of them know anything apart from the above.

There is a gravestone in Midleton Cemetery which Denis O’Brien commissioned giving the dates of death for his siblings:

MARGARET 21 Nov 1960
PATRICK 3 May 1961
CATHERINE 16 June 1962
And his sister who outlived him BRIDGET MURPHY (who died 17 Apr 1977).

Any information on the family or as to access birth records in Cork would be helpful and very much appreciated.

If I could find out about the above Denis and his siblings I will be able to find out whether or not Patrick O’Brien was my great grandfather or great-great uncle. I would like to find out who their parents were and if the siblings married or not.
