I think Phoenix, an old hand here, means internet search engines ;) ... the bots that roam the net collecting and caching web pages that then appear in search results, e.g. for 'charles william kendrick' as in Phoenix's post

my granddad appears in 1911 as two years older than he was, having enrolled in the military when he was 15 but plainly having misstated his age

that Merchant Navy member is quite a reasonable hypothesis

this shows Charles William Kendrick born 1889 Wiltshire in military service records 1918-1921

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KC7B-MWG

A Charles Wm Kendrick aged 31 (c1892) traveled to the USA in 1923

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JNXL-1J7

there is no birth in the GRO index to match those details

I'm flagging it here, Kath, in case the email address doesn't work. Then it is visible for the bots.

As this post is nearly 6 years old you might do better to click on Wendy's name and send her a private message. If she still has the same email address then she will receive notification from Genes that she has a message from you.

I came across this as I am descended from Alice's grandparents in Salisbury.

There is a Charles William Kendrick in the merchant navy who gives his dob as 1 April 1889, in Salisbury. That's two years older than he should be, but he shows as 4 days old in 1891, so his birthday is correct.

In 1901 Charles Kendrick is a harbour diver living at 2 Sefton Terrace, Newhaven, Sussex with his wife Alice (nee HORNE) and two children: Mary Kendrick 13 (born Caroline Mary HORNE) and William Kendrick 10 (born Charles William HORNE around the time of his parents marriage in 1891).

Caroline Mary was my grandmother and I am keen to find out what happened to her brother. Does anyone know of him? He does not appear in any family trees on GR as far as I can see.

This message is also posted under the surname Kendrick.
