Knight Family-Midhurst West Sussex-please help

Debbie Report 9 Mar 2008 16:52

I am a newbie and I would really appreciate any help. I'm looking for 13 siblings of the Knight family, all born between 1919 and the 1930's. I have found some namely Audrey, Horace, Doris, Barbara, Annie, James, Violet and George but I can't find the others. I believe their names were Maude, Frederick, Harold, Dorothy and Cyril. They were born to William Knight and Alice Knight (nee Ansell). There must be 100's of descendants of the above but I can't find one. They lived around the Bentley area near Farnham.
Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction.
many thanks

Finding the missing siblings will mean going through the birth registers quarter by quarter as they are not fully transcribed yet on FreeBMD.

I think this might be Alice M F Ansell on the 1901 census.

Hi Marlene

Thank you very much. I already knew those details but thank you anyway. It's their children I can't find, or rather some of them. Where is the best place to look for the children quarter by quarter. Is it because they aren't fully transcribed that I can't find them? Thank you for your help

If you have a subscriptiojn to Ancestry you can go to the Full BMD index and this is searchable by name quarter by quarter.

Will be quite a long job.

Hi Debs,
I am researching Knights in the Midhurst area but mine don't come into my tree until further back than you are looking at the moment but if you need any help with parish registers for this area I would be happy to look for you as I have this general area out most tuesdays anyway as a number of my lines are from this area. Just let us know if you have anything in particular you need help with, and I will give it a go can only do West Sussex look ups though.

Hi Debs,
I know you know the marriage reference for Alice and William but do you have the marriage cert if not would you like me to see if I can find it in the parish registers for you. I could also look for Alice and siblings baptisms if that would help but I don't want to waste my time if you already have this info. So please get back to me if you would like me to search for you. What registration district were the above births you mention from 1921 to 1933?

HI Clare

Yes that would be great as I don't have the marriage certificate. The births would be in the Midhurst registration district.

Thanks for your help

Hi Debs,
Managed to pop into the records office this afternoon, had a feeling I might not be able to go tuesday as they have decided to start work on monday refitting my kitchen and bathroom. Anyway couldn't find the marriage of Alice to William and I looked in all the available parishs of Petworth registration district unfortunately some of the registers don't go far enough forward for what you are looking for although many do. Did find four baptisms for you in the parish church of Southwick. Parents Jesse Thomas and Mary ann Ansell. Jesse a labourer.

Harold Henry Ansell baptised 30th April 1899
Alice Maude Frances Ansell baptised 24th June 1900
Cissie Sarah Elizabeth Ansell born 24th April 1903 baptised October 1903
Eric Victor Ansell born 28th March 1906 baptised 27th May 1906

Harold Henry Ansell was buried 7th April 1906 aged 7 he was living in the steyning union workhouse, new shoreham at the time of death.
Cissie Ansell was buried 4th May 1906 aged 3 of the same workhouse.

Jesse Thomas Ansell marries Mary Ann Puttick Steyning 2b 631 Jun Q 1898 will try and find this marriage next time I get over there not sure when it will be depends how long the work takes in my house. Mary Ann Puttick birth registered steyning 2b 265 Sep Q 1867 her parents were Daniel and Sarah Puttick she had siblings called Ann c1859, Jane c1871, Harriet c1876. Daniel's parents were James and Ann Puttock, Daniel had siblings called James c1821, William c1826, George c1828, Charles c1831 Sussanna c 1832 David c1834, Mathew and Luke twins c1836 Daniel c1838.

Found 3 baptisms in Fittleworth parish church.
Parents James and Ann Puttock James a labourer
Mathew Puttock baptised 12th June 1836
Luke Puttock baptised 12th June 1836
Daniel Puttock baptised 11th February 1838

Hope this helps, will try and see what else I can find next time I get over there.
