“A Dictionary of English Surnames: The Standard Guide to English Surnames”, P.H. Reaney & R.M. Wilson, Oxford University Press, 1995 Pridd(e)y: From Priddy (Somerset). The earliest recorded instance is of a William Pridy who is listed in the 1327 Lay Subsidy Rolls for Worcestershire. The use of the surname indicates the place where the man held land, the place he originally came from or where he lived. “The Concise Oxford Dictionary of English Place-names”, Fourth Edition, Eilert Ekwall, Oxford University Press, 1960 Priddy, Somerset: A derivative of Welsh pridd ‘earth, soil’. “The Story of Priddy: A Mendip Village from the earliest of times to the present day”, Alan Thomas, Ina Books, Wells, 1989 & Phelps’s “History of Somerset”, 1836 Priddy is in a gentle undulation of the Mendip Hills 5m NW of Wells. The road from Cheddar is nearby. The village is full of archaeological sites, the two best-known being Priddy Nine Barrows and the Priddy Circles. The Barrows are Bronze Age burial mounds. The Priddy Circles are ‘henge’ monuments: three and a half circles covering a distance of ¾ mile.
