I found this information in the New York Public Library (Geneological Dept.)in the 1970's. A lot of the info was from the archives of Winchester Cathedral which owned land in Somerset in the old days. Originally the name was ORCEARD,which was a cultivated valley near Taunton, and tied later to the name ORCHARD PORTMAN. Itis remarkable that the place had already been given its descriptive name as early as the 9th century. ORCEARD Parish was given by AETHELWULF,King of the West Saxons, in about AD 854 to Winchester Cathedral
