G83 Report 21 Mar 2008 10:19

Hi all for a while now i have had a relation in my family tree which i now believe may be incorrect.
I have a William Maslin 1842 marrying a Elizabeth Plank b1839 married 1862 having children Jane 1862, Henry 1864, George 1864, susan 1869, hannah 1874, david 1876, Eliza 1878, and charles 1880. mum and dad william / elizabeth born devizes wiltshire and the children in london areas. However i have found a connection on this site and that lady has a different mother / wife to william and these children.
I dont know what is right or wrong here as im sure i have the right info. Any ideas or can anyone help in anyway?

thank you

can anyone help?

Christopher Report 21 Mar 2008 18:44

Yes, go with your instincts and the proof you have.

I looked at a tree I was allowed to see on here last week, it's wrong, the woman in question was married and her sister was living with them. That was probably where the surname has taken from. Unfortunately, if you go back to the 1841 census and the marriage indexes, she is a half sister. The father of the woman in question had died, leaving her mother a widow, the step father was living with his parents. They married after 1841 and had more children.

If you are sure you are correct and have all the evidence to prove it, stick to your guns.

thank you all, the lady has the same children, same children places of birth although the dates are out by like 1 year or so, and she has the children marrying into other families as i have.
altho she has william born a few years before i have him and in a different area.
She said she got the info from the cenus.

HI Alexandra,

- I think this is the 1871 census info (as you say, William a little older):

Rotherhithe, Surrey

Eliza Maslin m Wm abt 1837 Bermondsey, Surrey, England Wife

Elizabeth Maslin d of Wm, Eliza abt 1860 Bermondsey, Surrey, England Daughter

Jane Maslin d of Wm, Eliza abt 1862 Bermondsey, Surrey, England Daughter

Wm Maslin m Eliza abt 1834 Newington, Surrey, England Head

George Maslin s of Wm, Eliza abt 1864 Rotherhithe, Surrey, England Son

Henry Maslin Wm, Eliza abt 1864 Rotherhithe, Surrey, England Son

John Maslin s of Wm, Eliza abt 1866 Rotherhithe, Surrey, England Son

Susan Maslin d of Wm, Eliza abt 1869 Rotherhithe, Surrey, England Daughter

This census has no mention of Devises or Wiltshire, but if the birth certificate says the mother's maiden name is Plank, then the certificate is more likely to lead you to the correct parents than the census - each enumerator had to deal with huge volumes of info.

This post is from six years ago but I’m just hoping someone might see this link.
I am linked to the Maslin’s of Rotherhithe
Sarah Maslin married Richard Sissons whose home was Yorkshire but had links to Rotherhithe. He is registered as a gentleman in his will.
I think the marriage was around the late 1820s.
My great great grandmother Louisa Elizabeth Maslin who later married John Perry of Devizes ,was living with Sarah Maslin who married Richard Sissons and they moved to Yorkshire until Louisa was about thirteen.
Amongst them is a Jane Maslin and I believe she is Louisa’s sister.
Louisa had a younger sister named Sarah and she went to live with Jane and her husband George Evitt. This was London too.
Whilst reading through these notes I have an idea that there may have been a Maslin family linked to a Plank family in Potterne which is a village outside Devizes.
Maslin is a Wiltshire name.
Sarah the elder returns to Devizes and takes Louisa with her she marries again to Richard Chamberlin. He dies within a year and Sarah marries for the third time to William and they manage The Castle Hotel in Devizes ( I doubt if they own it)
There was a lot of money involved and there are hundreds of pages of letters and documents involving the Maslin’s ,Perrys and Banks families.
I’m still not totally certain where Louisa Elizabeth Maslin later marrying John Perry in Devizes is from.
She seems to be linked to Rotherhithe Maslin’s and although she states that her birth is Covent Garden ,there is no evidence.
Anyone reading this can think of a link ?
Thank you.

Welcome to the boards.
G83/Alexandra is still a member of Genes so you can click on her name and send her a pm. If she has kept her details up to date then she will get a notification from Genes. Genes do not notify of additions to threads,

You could also look at Search/ search all members trees to see if anyone else has the family in their trees.

London records are pretty good so I’m a bit surprised you haven’t found the birth. As she seems confused where she was born havevyou found any possibilities at all and have you followed the parents through possible moves.
