Grandfather Frederick William Langton (DOB - 1867) immigrated to Canada around 1906 - trying to find info re his family in ?Oxfordshire

Alison

Alison Report 14 Mar 2010 04:52

Hi Anne,

Have you any other information on Frederick?

I can't find a birth for 1867. Is it possible that it could have been 1870?
I can see a birth 1870 for a frederick William Langton at Wallingford.
The district Wallingford spans the boundaries of the counties of Berkshire and Oxfordshire;

Also passenger a LANGTON F W 1871 M 1906 Liverpool Canada Montreal

Alison

Do you think this could be your Frederick?

In the 1901 census there are 2 obvious Fred Will Langtons, with wives etc, plus Fred Langtons, some possible correctish areas. Could you tell us any possible names for wives or children to work out which one is yours?
Thanks.

Anne

Anne Report 15 Mar 2010 19:56

Thanks.
Yes, Frederick married my grandmother in Ontario, Canada in 1908, and had a family of seven children here with her. And right, the marriage certificate might be a source of parent's name. I will check that out.

Appreciate your time.

Anne

Anne Report 15 Mar 2010 19:59

I do not have an concrete "evidence" of birth date - in family records here in Ontario, Frederick WIlliam was indicated to have DOB of July 31, 1867.

The passenger list certainly may fit the time-frame - he arrived in the area of Ontario where he met and married my grandmother around l906/07.

Thank you, Alison, for that tip.

patchem Report 15 Mar 2010 20:02

On his Canadian marriage certificate does it state whether he has been married before, and what is his father's name on it? Also what profession did he have?
As he was almost 40 before he went to Canada it is highly possible that he married here, which is why we were looking for a marriage here.
Thanks.
Sorry, I am asking questions at the same time as someone is giving answers, so we overlap.

Anne

Anne Report 15 Mar 2010 20:03

Interesting thought of Frederick William's with "wives" in 1901 census. No family history passed down to suggest he had had a wife/children in Britain, but he would have been in late '30's when he came to Canada, so that certainly would be a possibility! Only other concrete fact that we have is that he was R.A. 4440, with postings in places such as Mauritius.

One question always leads to another question! Thanks for looking.

Thank you, mgnv ...
Yes, you have definitely identified my grandfather - thank you for the work. I grew up on Barrie Island, which is near Gore Bay, on Manitoulin Island, sitting in Georgian Bay, part of Lake Huron.

I am happy to find the names of my great-grandparents, interestingly that ggm was Ann, as I am "Anne"!
Hopefully, this will help me find info on siblings who may have remained in England, and any descendants. I believe my grandmother corresponded with a "Cousin Vi" - a Langton relative .... We did have info on grandmother Frances Lane, as she lived with us when I was a child, but not to extent you have documented. Much appreciated.

Anne

Anne Report 18 Mar 2010 04:16

Alison - since I am new to this, I may not interpret all the info correctly, however, it seems that you are corroborating the info provided previously, but that the great-grandmother's surname was not "Penn" - is that then a place name?

Grandfather Frederick WIlliam was in the R.A., so by 1901 may have been stationed abroad .... did such persons get recorded in any way for the census?

Thanks ... hoping to get more adept at understanding this.

Alison

Alison Report 18 Mar 2010 04:48

Hi Anne,

Yes Pen is a Place in buckinghamshire., it states on a couple of census that she came from there.

Have a look at the site below.

http://www.aboutbritain.com/towns/penn.asp

I think her name was Allen before she was married.

Yes I know it does take a little getting used to all this family info. Especially when you have so much to take in.

I'm not sure on the overseas 1901census for Frederick, i don't think so but I may be wrong.

Once I knew Gore Bay was a place, not a typo, I found it easy enough - abt 12 km E of Barrie Island.

A few years ago, I started searching for my "Langton" relatives from the Oxfordshire area, and many of you sent me useful information. Time goes by, but lately I have pursued this again, and as always, for as many answers, there are questions!

In 1881 and 1891 census an "Ethel Langton", grand-daughter is listed in the household of Ann (Allen) Langton Maynard & Frank Maynard. Anyone who can direct me to her birth/marriage or anything?

Thank you.
