My grandfather Frank Sutton was born 1876 in O'okiep, a copper mining town in the British Cape Colony of South Africa. His mother Sarah Eleanor Sutton was unmarried but I have discovered his baptism record which names his father as John Cowan, Mining Engineer. I would love to know what happened to John Cowan??? Did he die in a mining accident before he could make Sarah an honest woman or did he run back to England (or wherever he came from) leaving her "holding the baby"? My guess is that he would have been born between 1845 and 1855. He was definitely in O'okiep at Christmas time 1875 - Frank was born the following September. I hope someone can help me solve this riddle - it would be wonderful to find Cowan relatives....................Judy Carroll |
