Mark_of_Four_(Counties) Report 28 Sep 2008 16:47

This affects searches for Cherry marriages in Jun 1844 on freeBMD and any sites which draw on its data, which includes Ancestry.

Here are the entries in the form in which the BMD index currently records them (cut and paste, no re-typing by me):-

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Jun 1844 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cheery Alfred Hull 22 274
Cheery Charles Bicester 16 67
Cheery George Hitchin 6 725
Cheery George Cambridge 14 5
Cheery Letitia Holywell 27 383
Cheery Williama Emma Leominster 26 303

CHECKING THE DATA FOR YOURSELF

At freeBMD, use the 'search images' option.
In the drop-down menus, select the following
Year: 1844/ Quarter: Jun/ Type: Marriages/ beginning with: C/ Image number: 1844M2-C-0070.
Click on your chosen file type.
At the download prompt, choose 'open' or 'save'.

You will immediately note that this is a typewritten index, not the original scrawly-handriting type. Either the GRO staff transcribed *exactly* what they thought the scrawl said, or else a typo crept in when the document was created (and each surname is typed only once).

So the surname sequence goes :-
CHERRINGTON
CHEERY
(6 entries)
CHERRYMAN

...which is obviously wrong.

REMEDY

None. Just be aware that problems like this may affect your searches, from time to time.

Please note that freeBMD will NOT accept attempts at correction of a fault in the original GRO index - even one as obvious as this.

One of the six could genuinely be called Cheery, for example so a blanket correction would be inappropriate.

I have added a postem to the record I was interested in as I have evidence to support a correction. I can do nothing about the other five.

I hope this information proves useful to someone.

regards,

Mark
