Trying to find Cavanagh

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Paul Report 8 May 2003 00:57

I am trying to find date and place of birth of Thomas Cavanagh. All I know is that he was born in Ireland and married Sarah Black in Cleaton, Cumberland on 27 October 1886. They moved to Hamilton, Lanarkshire where he was a coal miner and they had a number of children who where then put into an orphanage so that Thomas and Sarah could go to America. Any information on these names would be a great help. Thanks in advance.

this is not really a direct answer to your post.

I have just started tracing my family tree.

My great grandmother was Sarah Cavanagh who married James Reilly in 1913 in hamilton.

Her father was Thomas Cavanagh ( i coal minor from Ireland) and mother was Sarah (dont know maiden name)

Could be same people although I have only just found this and have still to research further.

If you have any information which you think might be of interest to me, your help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello, Greg - welcome to the boards.

Unfortunately, Paul posted that in 2003, so isn't likely to be checking for replies here now.

You can try contacting him privately, by clicking on his name and sending a message.
If he still has the same email address, GenesReunited will contact him.

If he replies, GR will send you an email to let you know.

If you would like us to try to help your researches, please tell us all the info you have - dates, places, etc - and we'll have a look.

EDIT: Having said that, if all the records are Scottish, you'd be best to buy credits on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.
As it's a non-subscription site, most helpers don't want to spend their credits for other people's researches.
That's the only site where you can see the Scottish 1911 census records, for example.

This is the marriage record on SP:

1913 REILLY JAMES CAVANAGH SARAH HAMILTON /LANARK 647/00 0216

If you buy credits, you can view/print the image of the marriage certificate - much cheaper than buying a copy.
That will tell you their ages, and their parents' names, and you can then work back through the years via birth and marriage records.

I wonder if this is your great-grandmother in 1901?
This is from Ancestry.co.uk - another user says the original document shows the surname as Cavanagh, but it has been mistranscribed on Ancestry. To see the original, you'd have to buy credits on SP and view the record on there.

Thanks for your replies.

That information should be a great help.

i had found and downloaded the marriage certificate, however i would never have found the 1901 census information.

It sounds very promising and is much apprieciated.

You can probably disregard the opening post Greg - there is no marriage in 1886 for Sarah Black in Cumberland - nor for Thomas Cavanagh! I also think the place Cleaton should be Cleator.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 5 Sep 2014 22:53

This could perhaps be the marriage Paul meant ??:

Marriages Mar 1887 (>99%)
BLACK Sarah Whitehaven 10b 717
Kavanagh Thomas Whitehaven 10b 717

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 5 Sep 2014 23:04

The older children's births:

Births Mar 1889 (>99%)
Cavanagh Annie Whitehaven 10b 609

Births Mar 1891 (>99%)
Cavanagh Sarah Whitehaven 10b 669

No birth for Mary in the right year in Cleator.
Unless this one, maybe??? She's Mary J in 1891 (I think Mary I is a mistranscription):

Births Sep 1887 (>99%)
CAVENER Mary Jane Whitehaven 10b 648

Could be the marriage ArgyllGran, but he had an exact date - obviously incorrect, I didn't check years either side. Should have done, as Whitehaven is the correct registration district for Cleator.

Puzzling to say the least.....

Name: Thomas Kavanagh
Event Type: Marriage
Registration Quarter: Jan-Feb-Mar
Registration Year: 1887
Registration District: Whitehaven
County: Cumberland
Event Place: Whitehaven, Cumberland, England
Volume: 10B
Page: 717
Line Number: 260

Thomas Kavanagh probably married one of the following people
Name: *** Margaret Black ***

ArgyllGran Report 6 Sep 2014 10:45

Looking at the image on FreeBMD, it definitely says Sarah.

However, immediately above her there's a Margaret Black (not married in Whitehaven) - so maybe a mistranscriptioin on FS?

Having done some FreeBMD transcription, I know how easy it is to get the person's name against the wrong reg district.

ADDED: Yes, that's what's happened - on FS, each person's name has been transcribed against the reg district for the person below them on the original list.
Checking other names on the FreeBMD image against the entries on FS, it shows , for example, Sophia Allan Black, who actually married in Newcastle, as having married in Chelsea - which is where the person below her married. Sarah Jane Black, who's above Sophia Allan Black on the list, and who married in Toxteth Park, is shown on FS as having married in Newcastle.

Then its showing incorrectly on GR Marriages too......!

Well, wonders will never cease - Ancestry has actually transcribed it right for once ;-)
