snowfairy Report 29 May 2013 11:11

Was just looking at this old thread of mine and thought an update on my Research would be good.
Because of the most fantastic help here, I was able to find out that Mary Ann Wicks was b.1818 in Norwich, daughter of Solomon Wicks (Wiltshire Militia, serving in Norwich) and Eleanor Ivory b. Norwich. I found out they moved with their growing Family down to live in Steeple Ashton, Wilts, Solomon`s home. In the Census`they appear to have been very, very poor indeed. Mary Ann their daughter, m. a James Cadby in 1842 Melksham. There I was stuck, so had to have help from a Researcher . He discovered that James was rather a bad lot and spent time in prison. It seems that he was sent to Australia in 1855-his Age was given as older in the prison Records but all else tallied.. He had tried to strangle Mary Ann, in Melksham, I have a newspaper Report! Their daughter Louisa Priscilla, was the biggest shock, my grandfather had always said his mother had died aged 38. Well we found out she spent c.43 years in Devizes Mental Home Roundway, not dying until 1933. On request we were sent all her records, they make traumatic reading. So yes, I have my answers and others. It has left my Family rather shocked and I feel rather guilty for having dug so deeply. Sometimes perhaps it is better to leave well alone. If my experiences help at all, records of People in the workhouse, mental homes and prisons, are often not shown in the census`.
I could write a book on my experience, it took me down a road that was very unexpected to say the least.

Dear Ann, Dea, Peter and all my lovely helpers. This evening I got in touch with a lady who had an Eleanor Ivory-thanks Ann- in her tree and would you believe it she did marry a Solomon Wicks of Steeple Ashton and she has a Mary Ann 1818 their daughter among other children. I am hoping that if I can verify the relationship with her then ofcourse James Cadby would be the husband. My gt. Gran didn`t die until 1933-45 years inside! her husband was long dead Dea, so their was nothing written just the Dr. of the Asylum. Believe me you have all helped so much today .I am going to sleep on it-we are an hour in front of Britain-and tomorrow start to unravel all the bits.
Night ,Night everybody,
j.

Julie,

Who was the informant on the death cert?

Was there an address or any other details?

Julie - I only put Edward Ivory in because of the Eleanor Ivory connection - thought it might be of interest as it appears to be part of the family - if you are looking in Peter, perhaps that answers your pm to me

You have a great clue to follow there - have you followed it?

"My grandfather never spoke of his mother -as she had died when he was 8, no one told him she was in a Mental home."

wowy ,thanks all of you so much for taking time out to help me in my search. I am absolutely blown away with it all. I can see why it is so difficult because I would never ever have thought of someone from Norwich that`s miles away.....I agree the names fit quite well. My grandfather never spoke of his mother -as she had died when he was 8, no one told him she was in a Mental home. Therefore she was forgotten and her whole family too.Very sad, I want to do this for my nieces who might have children one day and have Baby Blues as my own mother did and suffered hell, thank heavens they didn`t lock her up-she is marvellous!
Have a lovely w/e all of you, Julie xxxxx

Looks like a possibility that they came from Norfolk?

Please I need help again....I have Louisa Priscilla Cadby (1852) plus mother Mary Ann(1816) all born Semington, Wilts. and no Father. Have had suggestions that James Cadby (1817) and a Mary Ann Weekes m. Sept 1843 were likely but somehow can`t quite get that as there were possibly two older children who do not fit into the pattern. Is there any other way I can find out before giving up the search? I have all details but -The FATHERS.
