LORD JOHN BLACKIE fought in the war of 1766 and for his services was created a Life Peer and given the post of Provost Marshall of Glasgow. His eldest son JOHN, following the lead of his father was also made Provost of Glasgow, he too being given a Life Peerage. The younger son, THOMAS, was engaged in the very profitable trade of smuggling, plying his trade from Scotland down to the West of England. In order to carry out his dubious profession, but also to to save the family name from scandal, THOMAS changed the spelling of his surname from BLACKIE to BLACKEY. THOMAS BLACKEY must have redeemed himself later in life, as he is known to have become an Officer of Customs in Liverpool, prior to his marriage to SARAH ROBINSON in 1805. The BLACKIE FAMILY CREST inscription reads :- 'TRUTH AND FAITHFULLNESS' The above is from the writings of JOAN BROTHERHOOD-BLACKEY wife of DOUGLAS GORDON BLACKEY (Great-great grandson of THOMAS BLACKEY)
